The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again
In The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, the enigmatic, legendary Warhol makes the reader his confidant on love, sex, food, beauty, fame, work, money, success, and much more.Andy Warhol claimed that he loved being outside a party--so that he could get in. But more often than not, the party was at his own studio, The Factory, where celebrities--from Edie Sedgwick and Allen Ginsberg to the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground--gathered in an ongoing bash.A loosely formed autobiography, told with his trademark blend of irony and detachment, this compelling and eccentric memoir riffs and reflects on all things Warhol: New York, America, and his childhood in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, as well as the explosion of his career in the sixties, and his life among the rich and famous.
The Andy Warhol Diaries Edited by Pat Hackett
NOW A MAJOR NETFLIX SERIES'His last great work of art' Nicholas Lezard, Guardian'Cruel, sexy, and sometimes heartbreaking ... Warhol is no neutral observer, but a character in his own right' Newsweek Andy Warhol kept these diaries faithfully from November 1976 right up to his final week, in February 1987. Written at the height of his fame and success, Warhol records the fun of an Academy Awards party, nights out at Studio 54, trips between London, Paris and New York, and surprisingly even the money he spent each day, down to the cent. With appearances from and references to everyone who was anyone, from Jim Morrison, Martina Navratilova and Calvin Klein to Shirley Bassey, Estee Lauder and Muhammad Ali, these diaries are the most glamorous, witty and revealing writings of the twentieth century.Edited with an Introduction by Pat Hackett

The autobiography of an American icon'I never think that people die. They just go to department stores'Andy Warhol - American painter, filmmaker, publisher, actor and major figure in the Pop Art movement - was in many ways a reluctant celebrity. Here, in his autobiography, he spills his secrets and muses about love, sex, food, beauty, fame, work, money, success, New York and America and its place in the world. But it is his reflections on himself, his childhood in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the explosion of his career in the Sixties and his life among celebrities - from working with Elizabeth Taylor to partying with the Rolling Stones - that give a true insight into the mind of one of the most iconic figures in twentieth-century culture.Andy Warhol (1928-1987), was an American painter, filmmaker, publisher, actor, and a major figure in the Pop Art movement. He also produced a significant body of film work, including the famous Chelsea Girls; characterised the epoch with the now-famous expression 'fifteen minutes of fame'; produced the first album by The Velvet Underground; and was nearly killed just two days before the assassination of JFK. A unique collection of brilliant quotations from the legendary Pop artistOne of the most influential artists of his time and ours, Andy Warhol is nearly as renowned for what he said as for what he did. Indeed, he is so quotable that things he never said are endlessly and plausibly attributed to him, including, fittingly, the most celebrated fake Warhol saying—“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Warhol-isms separates legend from fact to present a unique and comprehensive collection of authentic quotations from the Pop artist. Gathered from interviews and other primary sources, these deadpan, droll, ironic, and sincere gems—in which a superficial embrace of superficiality often disguises provocative, unconventional ideas—provide compelling insights into the life and work of an artist who has left an indelible mark on art and popular culture.Select quotations from the book:I think an artist is anybody who does something well.I went to [a psychiatrist] once, and he never called me back. They always say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.I’ve never met a person I couldn’t call a beauty.New things are always better than old things.I’m still a commercial artist. I was always a commercial artist.

Andy Warhol: Seven Illustrated Books 1952-1959
Warhol's classic 1950s illustrated books for just $200 In 1950s New York, before he became one of the most famous names of the 20th century, Andy Warhol was a skilled and successful commercial artist. During this time, as part of his strategy to woo and cultivate clients and forge friendships, he created seven handmade promotional books for valued contacts, featuring his own unique drawings and quirky texts and revealing his fondness for-among other subjects-cats, food, myths, shoes, beautiful boys, and gorgeous girls. Decades later, with originals now changing hands for thousands of dollars at auction, TASCHEN presents an immaculate boxed series of these seven books, replicating Warhol's originals as closely as possible down to the format, dimensions, and paper stock. With titles such as Love Is A Pink Cake, 25 Cats Named Sam, and A la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, the series reveals the artist's quirky character as well as his accomplished draftsmanship, boundless creativity, and innuendo-laced humor. The books make delightful play with styles and genres as much as with design, materials, and formats. The lithograph portfolio, A Is for Alphabet, devotes a page to each letter of the alphabet, with illustrations complemented by stumbling three-line verses that tell of strange encounters between man and animal. is at once a Warhol twist on a children's book and a covert celebration of gay love. Wild Raspberries, meanwhile, is a spoof cookbook with a cornucopia of adventurous recipes on 19 portrait-format pages of instructions and illustrations. Little-known, much-coveted jewels in the Warhol crown, these hand-drawn delights are as appealing and original today as they were back in the halcyon days of the 1950s. With an introductory essay by Warhol scholar Nina Schleif as well as contemporary illustrations and photographs of Warhol, this meticulous reprint offers a unique glimpse at a budding genius on the cusp of global fame. It was 1953 when, not long after arriving in New York City, a young artist named Andy Warhol had begun to make his way in the world of commercial illustration. As Arthur Edelman, his former employer, relates in his introductory note, ‘In a hallway of the Empire State Building, outside a shoe manufacturer’s office, stood a young man with Jackson Pollock shoes, a rumpled black suit, a portfolio and a shock of white hair.’ Over the next decade, Warhol created scores of whimsical advertisements for the Edelmans, including a colouring book that could only have come from the mind of Warhol, created especially for clients’ children for Christmas in 1961, and somewhat of a cause célèbre when it was published in 1990. The original edition was only 24pp, but Warhol actually created many more drawings through the mid/late 1950s and early 1960s; this revised edition is extended with many more of these images. A Coloring Book: Drawings by Andy Warhol will amuse a new audience with its delightfully carefree menagerie and mid-century charm.

The classic, scandalous, and bestselling tell-all-and-then-some from Andy Warhol--now a Netflix series produced by Ryan Murphy. This international literary sensation turns the spotlight on one of the most influential and controversial figures in American culture. Filled with shocking observations about the lives, loves, and careers of the rich, famous, and fabulous, Warhol's journal is endlessly fun and fascinating. Spanning the mid-1970s until just a few days before his death in 1987, THE ANDY WARHOL DIARIES is a compendium of the more than twenty thousand pages of the artist's diary that he dictated daily to Pat Hackett. In it, Warhol gives us the ultimate backstage pass to practically everything that went on in the world-both high and low. He hangs out with "everybody" Jackie O ("thinks she's so grand she doesn't even owe it to the public to have another great marriage to somebody big"), Yoko Ono ("We dialed F-U-C-K-Y-O-U and L-O-V-E-Y-O-U to see what happened, we had so much fun"), and "Princess Marina of, I guess, Greece," along with art-world rock stars Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali, and Keith Haring. Warhol had something to say about everyone who crossed his path, whether it was Lou Reed or Liberace, Patti Smith or Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra or Michael Jackson. A true cultural artifact, THE ANDY WARHOL DIARIES amounts to a portrait of an artist-and an era-unlike any other.

'POPism reads like a novel... Social history of the rarest kind, set down in ultra-sharp focus by someone who helped shape the events he describes' The New YorkerA cultural storm swept through the 1960s - Pop Art, Bob Dylan, psychedelia, underground movies - and at its centre sat a bemused young artist with silver hair: Andy Warhol. Andy knew everybody (from the cultural commissioner of New York to drug-driven drag queens) and everybody knew Andy. His studio, the Factory, was the place: where he created the large canvases of soup cans and Pop icons that defined Pop Art, where one could listen to the Velvet Underground and rub elbows with Edie Sedgwick and where Warhol himself could observe the comings and goings of the avant-guarde.
