Angus Trumble, curator of paintings and sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art, director of the National Portrait Gallery, author, historian, blogger, genealogist, collector of obscure facts, boulevardier, friend, brother, uncle (and occasional agony aunt), and workaholic, who left hundreds of thousands of words, of which this is a small sample. These short pieces, which he had compiled for publication before his death in 2022, are charming, learned, eclectic, whimsical, engaging, witty, scholarly, reflective, and disarmingly candid. They address topics as diverse as florists, the plague, Caravaggio, tiaras, the gold rush, war memorials, and perfume. Also included is a moving fragment of memoir, and a reflection on his lifelong relationship with his teddy bear, Brownie.

"I gather Foster has found something disagreeable in the motor car."1926. Norman Threlfall, a young naval lieutenant, aide to the Governor of The St Edward Islands, is attempting to explain to the Governor's wife that a headless torso (male) has been found in the back seat of the vice-regal Rolls Royce wearing nothing except very expensive French cami-knickers in pink mousseline soie. 2020. Excavations for a spa in the grounds of the former Government House (now a luxury hotel and casino) uncover the remains of a French soldier in a locked trunk, apparently tortured to death. The discovery threatens to derail delicate post-Brexit negotiations and two civil servants, Mike and Sharon, are under increasing pressure from the PM's office to avoid by any means British culpability for the death of the French hero.

The Edwardian age was as brief as the Victorian era that preceded it was long. It has been depicted as an indolent summer afternoon of imperial and elite complacency, but also as a period of rapid political, economic, and artistic change, culminating in the First World War. This magnificent book explores themes of power, nostalgia, and a contrasting lightness of touch that characterized the period. Issues of creation, consumption, and display are examined through a range of objects, including portraits by Sargent and Boldini, diamond tiaras and ostrich-feather fans, jewel-like Autochrome color photography, and a spectacular embroidered gown that belonged to the American-born Vicereine of India. Spanning divides of class and geography, this book identifies opulence and leisure as driving forces for the domestic and imperial British economic engine in the early years of the 20th century.Published in association with the Yale Center for British ArtExhibition Schedule:Yale Center for British Art (02/28/13–06/02/13)
