The most controversial of the Bront sisters' novels, Anne Bront 's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the story of Helen Graham, a woman who, unique for her time, acts in her own best interest to rise above her personal circumstances to secure a better life for her son. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a powerful and gripping story of oppression, bravery, and love. Considered to be one of the first feminist novels, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was so controversial upon publication that Anne's sister, Charlotte, prevented its re-publication after Anne's death in 1849.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and final novel by the English author Anne Bront . It was first published in 1848 under the pseudonym Acton Bell. Probably the most shocking of the Brontes' novels, it had an instant and phenomenal success, but after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication. Gilbert Markham narrates how a mysterious widow, Mrs Helen Graham, arrives at Wildfell Hall, a nearby mansion. A source of curiosity for the small community, the reticent Mrs Graham and her young son, Arthur, are slowly drawn into the social circles of the village. Initially Gilbert Markham casually courts Eliza Millward, despite his mother's belief that he can do better. His interest in Eliza wanes as he comes to know Mrs Graham. In retribution, Eliza spreads (and perhaps creates) scandalous rumours about Helen. With gossip flying, Gilbert is led to believe that his friend Mr Lawrence is courting Mrs Graham. At a chance meeting on a road Gilbert strikes the mounted Lawrence with a whip handle, causing him to fall from his horse. Though she is unaware of this confrontation, Helen Graham still refuses to marry Gilbert, but when he accuses her of loving Lawrence she gives him her diaries.

"Agnes Grey" is a 1847 novel by English author Anne Bront . Her debut novel, it tells the story of a governess called Agnes Grey who works in families of the English upper class in the early nineteenth century. Widely believed to have been heavily influenced by her own experiences as a governess, is an authentic portrayal of their delicate roles and how they affected young women. Anne Bront (1820 - 1849) was an English novelist and poet. She was the youngest member of world-renowned the Bront family, famous for their contributions to English literature. Although her novels are now classics of English literature, she was not as well known as her sisters-partly due to the fact that her sister Emily Bront prevented the re-publication of "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" after her death. This fantastic novel is highly recommended for all lovers of the English language and is well deserving of a place on any bookshelf. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. Probably the most shocking of the Bront s' novels, it had an instant and phenomenal success, but after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication. The novel is framed as a series of letters from Gilbert Markham to his friend and brother-in-law about the events connected with the meeting of his wife. A mysterious young widow arrives at Wildfell Hall, an Elizabethan mansion which has been empty for many years, with her young son and servant. She lives there in strict seclusion under the assumed name Helen Graham and soon finds herself the victim of local slander. Refusing to believe anything scandalous about her, Gilbert befriends Helen and discovers her past. In her diary, Helen depicts her husband's physical and moral decline through alcohol and her desperate attempts to save their son from his influence in the dissipated aristocratic society from which she ultimately flees. The depiction of marital strife and women's professional identification has also a strong moral message mitigated by authors's belief in universal salvation. Most critics now consider The Tenant of Wildfell Hall to be one of the first feminist novels. May Sinclair, in 1913, said that the slamming of Helen's bedroom door against her husband reverberated throughout Victorian England. In leaving her husband, Helen violates not only social conventions, but also the early 19th century English law.

A mysterious young widow calling herself Helen Graham arrives at Wildfell Hall and immediately arouses her new neighbors' suspicions with her unconventional opinions and the attention she draws from the local bachelors. One of her admirers, a farmer named Gilbert Markham, readily offers his friendship but has second thoughts about Helen's reclusive conduct and the gossip it excites. When Helen allows Gilbert to read her diary, he discovers the reason behind her secretive behavior -- a disastrous marriage to a ne'er-do-well, whom she ultimately flees in defiance of the legal lack of rights for wives. An instant bestseller upon publication under the pseudonym Acton Bell, Anne Bront 's book was later suppressed by her eldest surviving sister, Charlotte, because of its unorthodox content. Written with a realism that scandalized critics in its portrayal of adultery, alcoholism, and marital discord, this compelling tale has been hailed as one of the first major works of feminist literature.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall challenged the prevailing morals of the Victorian era. Especially shocking, at the time, was Helen's slamming of her bedroom door in the face of her husband, thereby overturning the sexual politics. It is considered to be one of the first feminist novels. The main character, Helen, is spirited and forthright, unafraid to speak to the men in her life with frankness. Anne Bront portrays this as desirable, compared to the meekness of Milicent, who is trampled and ignored by her unrepentant husband. Vice is not unique to the men, however; Lady Lowborough's adultery has a particularly devastating effect on her husband, and the malice of Eliza Millward is poisonous to the entire community.

Agnes Grey is an 1847 novel written by English author Anne Bront . The novel is about a governess of that name and is said to be based on Bront 's own experiences in the field. It was Bront 's first novel. Similar to her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre, this is a novel that addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman. The Irish novelist George Moore praised Agnes Grey as "the most perfect prose narrative in English letters."
