The question of how refugees are to be hosted and represented in Europe is not only an urgent one but a persistent one. Drawing on art history, migration studies and postmigration studies, Anne Ring Petersen examines contemporary artistic representations of forced displacement. She argues that artistic and curatorial practices can help foster cultural citizenship among refugees and asylum seekers as well as deepening the understanding of refugeedom in host countries through art’s worldmaking and storytelling capacities. Focusing on Denmark, and including a chapter on Palestine, this study adds new perspectives to postmigration studies and a pioneering exploration of understudied material to art history.
Postmigration, Transculturality and the Transversal Politics of Art
This is the first book to develop a postmigrant analytical perspective for the study of art, concentrating on how postmigration reopens the study of contemporary art and migration. The book introduces art historians and other scholars with a methodological interest in cultural analysis to the innovative concept of postmigration, offering a comprehensive introduction to the various meanings and uses of the term as well as translating it methodologically to an art historical context. The book analyses art projects from Denmark, Germany and Great Britain, which address some of the current challenges to European societies of immigration, and by drawing on theory from fields such as migration studies, transcultural studies and feminist, postcolonial and political theory, as well as re-engaging established concepts such as imagination, commemoration, belonging, identity, racialization, community, public space and participation. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, art and politics, migration studies, and transcultural studies. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license. This book offers a compelling study of contemporary developments in European migration studies and the representation of migration in the arts and cultural institutions. It introduces scholars and students to the new concept of ‘postmigration’, offering a review of the origin of the concept (in Berlin) and how it has taken on a variety of meanings and works in different ways within different national, cultural and disciplinary contexts. The authors explore postmigrant theory in relation to the visual arts, theater, film and literature as well as the representation of migration and cultural diversity in cultural institutions, offering case studies of postmigrant analyses of contemporary works of art from Europe (mainly Denmark, Germany and Great Britain).

Stig Brøgger’s artistic endeavours from the 1960s to the present day encompass virtually all artistic media – from photography to painting, installation art, film, artists’ books, sculptures and public art projects. For more than six decades, Stig Brøgger (b. 1941) has been an important figure on the Danish art scene. At a very early stage of his career, he took part in experimental exhibitions showcasing young Danish art, contributing to the develop-ment of new trends such as Land art and Conceptual art on the international scene. Brøgger’s works can be seen as artistic reflections on new departures within culture, art history, media technology, philosophy and science. In his artistic practice, as well as in his capacity as a writer, editor, exhibition organiser and professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Brøgger has always sought to expand the scope of what an artist can do, thereby paving the way for and inspiring subsequent generations of Danish artists.Featuring lavishly illustrated articles by Mikkel Bogh, Anne Ring Petersen, Tania Ørum, Charlotte Præstegaard, Jean-François Lyotard and the artist himself, Stig Brøgger – Now Here offers the first full survey of Brøgger’s extensive body of work.

Stig Brøgger NOW HERE giver for første gang en enestående kortlægning og dokumentation af billedkunstneren Stig Brøggers (f. 1941) omfattende værk. This book addresses a topic of increasing importance to artists, art historians and scholars of cultural studies, migration studies and international relations: migration as a profoundly transforming force that has remodelled artistic and art institutional practices across the world. It explores contemporary art’s critical engagement with migration and globalisation as a key source for improving our understanding of how these processes transform identities, cultures, institutions and geopolitics. The author explores three interwoven issues of enduring interest: identity and belonging, institutional visibility and recognition of migrant artists, and the interrelations between aesthetics and politics, including the balancing of aesthetics, politics and ethics in representations of forced migration.

This book explores how installation art developed into an interdisciplinary genre in the 1960s, and how its special intertwinement of the visual and the performative has acted as a catalyst for the generation of new artistic phenomena. It investigates how it became one of today's most widely used art forms, increasingly expanding into consumer, popular and urban cultures, where the installations' often spectacular appearances ensure that they fit into contemporary demands for sense-provoking and immersive cultural experiences. Making an important contribution to the development of the critical and theoretical discourse on installation art, Ring Petersen addresses a series of basic questions: What is an installation? What techniques does it employ? How does installation art affect its viewers? How can we explain the rise of installation art in a cultural-historical perspective? Answers to these questions are pursued through analyses of installation art's spatial, temporal and discursive aspects as well as its reception aesthetics and cultural-historical contexts, and through analyses of a large number of works from a variety of sub-genres, including performance installations, video installations, installational exhibitions and recent use of installation in commercial contexts, including by artists such as Bruce Nauman, Olafur Eliasson, Mona Hatoum, Pipilotti Rist, Ilya Kabakov, Superflex, Thomas Hirschhorn, Carsten Höller, Terike Haapoja and ART + COM.
