Originally published in 1998, this handbook describes the statutes and cases that defined the governance, control and authority of the provincial police forces in England and Wales at the time. For many years the complexity and range of these legal authorities had caused misunderstandings and doubt when differing aspects of police activities had been questioned. To clarify the law a major step was taken in the enactment of the Police Act 1996. The consolidating Act brought together most of the existing statutory provisions regarding the governance of police forces. However, since about 1980, a number of other factors relevant to the powers and control of the police had emerged, most notably:Increased civil litigation had led to a number of cases defining the civil liability of the police;Increased use of judicial review procedures with consequent case decisions defining police powers in particular circumstances;Greater centralisation in police policies together with the Home Secretary’s control of finance and other matters;Increased police use of sophisticated technology for record keeping and surveillance purposes; The involvement of the security service in an anti-criminal role. The book (which includes illustrative charts) covers many complex legal issues. It has been written in a plain non-legalistic style. It is understandable to non-lawyers. However, for the benefit of practitioners, all statutory and case references are provided so that original materials can be consulted by those needing further information.

In a very simple prose, Hesse has conveyed a very profound message for all seekers. A brahmin boy follows his heart and goes through various lives to finally understand what it means to be enlightened. He experiences life as a pious brahmin, a Samana, a rich merchant, a lover and an ordinary ferryman, to a father. Neither a practitioner nor a devotee, neither meditating nor reciting, Siddhartha comes to blend in with the world, resonating with the rhythms of nature, bending the reader's ear down to hear answers from the river...

And then the light-hearted fellow-for a light heart is often a kind one-seeing that open raillery was powerless, tried gentler means to cheer his companion up. "Look, Tournier," he whispered, after a pause, "what a charming view is on the left there. We must be on high ground. What a panorama for poor flat England If we are good boys, we shall be out on parole, and be able to stroll about the country, and chat with the cherry-lipped maidens at the farms, and drink the farm-house milk, and, what is better, their famous English beer. And look, there is a lake, I declare. It seems a good-sized one. We will go fishing." So he ran on; and though the words pattered down in vain, like rain upon the pavement, yet the evident intention unconsciously pleased, as kind intentions often, if not always, do, however awkward the way in which they are displayed. And now, as the column passed a clump of trees at a bend in the road, the barracks and their surroundings suddenly came into view.
Everything I Need to Know, I Learned from Cartoons!
Brown--actor, singer, comedian, and author--did not have parents. Instead, he was raised by an assortment of wise-aleck bunnies, lisping ducks, one-eyed sailors, friendly ghosts, future-men, cave-men, six-year-old robots, and mice. Throughout his childhood, these Kartoon-Karetakers generously imparted their experience, strength, and hope, such that Brown could stride boldly into adulthood and go on to lead a balanced and well-adjusted life.
