Arthur Schnitzler (18621931) var en österrikisk författare och dramatiker, den mest skandalomsusade bland de stora begåvningarna i sin tids Wien. De stora vidderna (1911) är en tragisk komedi om moderna människor som febrilt söker kärlek och sviker utan att själva förstå varför. Författaren Horace Engdahl har såväl översatt som skrivit ett förord.

Arthur Schnitzler (18621932) tillhör de mest begåvade av sekelskiftets Wienförfattare. Han skrev såväl prosa som dramatik och redan under hans livstid blev den mondäna värld som utför utgör hans litterära fond en historisk företeelse. Fröken Else (1924) är ett exempel på detta, en kortroman om pengar och könsroller, i spänning- en mellan begär, frihet och underkastelse. När Elses far hamnar i ekonomiska svårigheter kan hans skuld bara lösas om Else offrar sig och visar sig naken för Dorsday, den man som är beredd att hjälpa henne. Pappans heder ställs mot dotterns anseende, den egna längtan mot familjeplikten. Erik Lindman Mata har översatt och skrivit ett efterord.
