MOPEDDAGBØKENE tek føre seg både framsida og baksida av Vietnams utviklingsmedalje, og boka gir eit unikt innblikk i eit land alle burde vite meir om. Så seint som på 1980-talet var landet svært fattig, krigsherja og isolert. Sidan har landet hatt ei veldig økonomisk utvikling, blitt verdsmeister i fattigdomsreduksjon og blitt heim til ei raskt veksande middelklasse. Levestandarden har betra seg dramatisk. Ein har betre helse og får betre utdanning. Mange kan gå ut og ete, og ein har tilgang til alt det forbrukssamfunnet tilbyr av gleder og sorger. Vietnam har til dømes gått frå å vere eit land av syklar til å huse nesten åtti millionar mopedar, fordelt på omkring hundre millionar innbyggjarar. Ved hjelp av ei særeigen blanding av sosialisme og marknadsøkonomi har Vietnam blitt ein av verdas største utviklingsuksessar. Samtidig trugar nye former for ulikskap den sosialistiske draumen, politiske rettar blir innskrenka, og ei rekkje miljøproblem fører til nye utfordringar.

This book studies the dramatic changes in consumption patterns in Vietnam over the past decades, combining a focus on everyday practices and societal transformations. Zooming in on the new urban middle classes, and through in-depth case studies in the realms of mobility, food and energy, the book brings new insights to some of the most urgent global sustainability challenges. Based on a decade of research in Vietnam, the book aims to contribute to better understanding one of the most fascinating ‘development success stories’ in the world. It introduces the term ‘consumer socialism’ to analyse some of the contradictions embedded in the socialist market economy. Simultaneously, the book aims to contribute to strengthening consumption research in and on emerging economies, and for this purpose develops a theoretical approach focusing on social practices and the political economy of consumption.

Urban space is an important part of the political environment-a place where people congregate to discuss, deliberate, and interact with each other. In times of great public discontent, people often turn to urban spaces to make their opinions heard and to demand change, with varying degrees of success. How are mass protests affected by the urban public space in which they occur? This book provides a theoretical model to analyse city spaces, based on the use of theories from political science, urban planning, and sociology. Hansen's approach consists of a mapping of the causal mechanisms between spatial elements, the political environment, and their combined effects on protests. This mapping is applied to three case studies-Kyiv, Minsk, and Moscow. In addition to the spatial perspective model, Urban Protest provides new insights as to how the interactions in space occur, and demonstrates how geography can create limitations and opportunities in a large variety of ways.
