St. Athanasius: The Life of St. Antony (Ancient Christian Writers)
St. Athanasius: The Life of St. Antony (Ancient Christian Writers) is a seminal work that offers a detailed account of the life and legacy of St. Antony, a pivotal figure in Christian monasticism. Athanasius narrates Antony's transformation from a wealthy youth to a revered hermit, illustrating his spiritual struggles, encounters with demonic forces, and profound commitment to a life of asceticism in the Egyptian desert. This biography serves not only as a historical document but also as a spiritual guide, inspiring generations of Christians to seek a deeper relationship with God through prayer, solitude, and self-discipline. Through Athanasius's eloquent prose, readers gain insight into the ideals of early Christian spirituality and the enduring impact of St. Antony's life on the Christian tradition.

Redaktør for serien, Dagfinn Stærk, setter Athanasius' livsvarige kamp inn i en større ramme i bokens innledende kapittel: «Den standhaftige biskop».

This Classic book - On the Incarnation -- introduces and orients the reader to critical theological thinking concerning the incarnation of Christ. Athanasius's presentation is written with a clarity that fosters biblical thought and facilitates Bible comprehension. You won't be disappointed. It's impossible to measure the influence of Athanasius over his works remain in print and are widely read, which shouldn't surprise usThis work was composed partly to explain Athanasius's thoughts on Jesus Christ and the nature of the Holy Spirit, and partly to refute the views of Arius, a rival deacon within the Egyptian church. According to Athanasius, God arrived on Earth as Christ to show humans a pure example of divinity - through this illustration, humans may themselves aspire to immortality.

On the Incarnation with an introduction by C.S. Lewis By any standard, this is a classic of Christian theology. Composed by St. Athanasius in the fourth century, it expounds with simplicity the theological vision defended at the councils of Nicaea and Constantinople: that the Son of God himself became "fully human, so that we might become god." Its influence on all Christian theology thereafter, East and West, ensures its place as one of the few "must read" books for all who want to know more about the Christian faith.

"Guds Ord ble menneske" er andre del av et tobindsverk der "Mot hedningene" utgjør første del. Boken blir regnet som en av Athanasius' ungdomsskrifter og kan tidfestes til mellom 318 og 320. Med dette er samtlige fire bøker kommet ut i denne serien med skrifter fra oldkirken.
The Orations of St Athanasius Against the Arians

The Orations of St Athanasius Against the Arians

Athanasius

In the fourth century, a group of Christians who followed the teachings of Arius, an Alexandrian presbyter, claimed that Christ was not truly divine but a created being. According to Arius, God alone is unique and self-existent: the Son is not. Although Arianism was condemned as heretical at the Council of Nicaea in 325, it continued to exert significant influence. Patriarch of Alexandria, St Athanasius (c.296–373) was among the most vigorous defenders of the orthodox view of the divinity of Christ. This 1873 publication presents the original Greek of four polemical orations directed against the Arian heretics. Also included is an account of Athanasius' life and a commentary on his work provided by William Bright (1824–1901), Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford, who specialised in the history of the early church.

Early Christian Lives

Written between the mid-fourth and late sixth centuries to commemorate and glorify the achievements of early Christian saints, these six biographies depict men who devoted themselves to solitude, poverty and prayer. Athanasius records Antony's extreme seclusion in the Egyptian desert, despite temptation by the devil and visits from his followers. Jerome also shows those who fled persecution or withdrew from society to pursue lives of chastity and asceticism in his accounts of Paul of Thebes, Hilarion and Malchus. In his Life of Martin, Sulpicius Severus describes the achievements of a man who combined the roles of monk, bishop and missionary, while Gregory the Great tells of Benedict, whose Rule became the template for monastic life. Full of vivid incidents and astonishing miracles, these Lives have provided inspiration as models for centuries of Christian worship.
