Nach dem Monumentum Ancyranum, Apolloniense und Antiochenum. Die philosophischen, biographischen und poetischen Werke des Kaisers Augustus sind verloren. Erhalten ist nur sein Rechenschaftsbericht, der einst auf Bronzetafeln vor seinem Mausoleum in Rom aufgestellt war. Eine Abschrift des Originals, von dem keinerlei Reste berliefert sind, wurde in Ancyra (dem heutigen Ankara) gefunden, weshalb die Inschrift als "Monumentum Ancyranum" bezeichnet wird. Eine weitere lateinische Kopie - das Monumentum Antiochenum - und eine griechische bersetzung - das Monumentum Apolloniense - sind in Bruchst cken erhalten. Beide berlieferungen, die lateinische und die griechische, sind hier dem deutschen Text gegen bergestellt. Eine gro e Anzahl antiker Zeugnisse - Zitate aus der Literatur, Inschriften, M nzlegenden -, die ebenfalls aufgenommen wurden, geben die M glichkeit des unmittelbaren Vergleichs mit der Parallel berlieferung. At the end of his life the emperor Augustus wrote an account of his achievements in which he reviewed his rise to power, his conquest of the world and his unparalleled generosity towards his subjects. This edition provides a text, translation and detailed commentary - the first substantial one in English for more than four decades - which is suitable for use with students of all levels.
