Geographie ist ein vielfältiges Fach. Das Studium setzt räumliches, historisches, sprachliches, kulturelles, naturwissenschaftliches und mathematisches Verständnis voraus. Die Geographie umfasst naturwissenschaftliche, geisteswissenschaftliche und sozialwissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse nicht in additiver, sondern in integrativer Sichtweise. Die erste Aufgabe dieses Buches ist es, Studienanfängern eine erste Orientierung im Fach Geographie zu vermitteln und sie in wissenschaftliches Denken und Arbeiten einzuführen. Die zweite Aufgabe ist es, eine Hilfestellung bei der Erarbeitung von Studien- und Lerntechniken zu bieten. In der Neuauflage wurden neue Beispiele aufgenommen und die Inhalte aktualisiert.

El prop sito de este libro es ayudar a los alumnos que se inician en la geograf a a entender las preguntas b sicas de esta ciencia, dar a conocer los principales m todos que emplea y orientarlos sobre las t cnicas de estudio y el trabajo cient fico en la universidad para que logren un aprendizaje exitoso. El valor agregado de este texto no es exponer nuevo conocimiento cient fico, sino desarrollar de manera comprensible y sencilla los temas que ocupan el saber y pensar del ge grafo y contribuir a la mejor comprensi n de una materia clave en el desarrollo de sociedades arm nicas.

Es waren sicher mehr als tausend Betten, in denen ich geschlafen habe. Das bleibt nicht aus, wenn man Geograph ist und das Reisen zum Beruf dazugeh rt. Aber ich schildere nicht nur Bettgeschichten, sondern viele lustige Begebenheiten, die sich in meinem Leben, Studium und meiner Lehrt tigkeit in T bingen, Innsbruck sowie meiner Gastprofessuren und auf Reisen ereignet haben. Mit einer Ausnahme, die aber gekennzeichnet ist, hat sich alles so zugetragen.

"A map of the world that does not include Utopia is not worth even glancing at, for it leaves out the one country at which Humanity is always landing." This was Oscar Wilde's judgement concerning atlases. If one looks through this book too quickly, one will not find utopia, but when taking enough time, the often exciting journey through Austrian ecology, biodiversity, land use, population, settlement areas and tourism indeed becomes a glance at near-utopia. The contrast between the alpine and non-alpine areas is always easy to see. Great variation within relatively small areas, diversity through altitude ranges and in cultural heritage are all characteristic of mountainous areas. Who doesn't get lost in dreams of Arcadia or even of utopia? Nevertheless, the atlas presents details that are above all related to concrete places. Both the maps and the accompanying texts, which are supplemented with helpful illustrations including diagrams, tables and photos, are informative. Thus, while offering clear facts this volume remains appealing and entertaining.
