Anthem is a novella by Russian-American writer Ayn Rand. This dystopian fiction was written in 1937 and first published in 1938 in the UK. The story takes place at an undesignated future date when mankind has entered another Dark Age. Technological advancement is now carefully planned and the concept of individuality has been eliminated. Equality 7-2521, a 21-year-old man, rebels by doing secret scientific research. He commits several transgressions. But his activity is discovered. He flees into the wilderness with the girl he loves and both plan to establish a new society based on rediscovered individualism. The plot of the novella revolves around this young man who exclusively uses plural pronouns such as 'we', 'our' and 'they' to refer to himself and others. The girl he meets is Liberty 5-3000, a 17-year-old Peasant girl who works in the fields. When he speaks to her, he discovers that she also thinks of him. Anthem was published in the US only after author's next novel, The Fountainhead, became a best seller.

This modern classic is the story of intransigent young architect Howard Roark, whose integrity was as unyielding as granite...of Dominique Francon, the exquisitely beautiful woman who loved Roark passionately, but married his worst enemy...and of the fanatic denunciation unleashed by an enraged society against a great creator. As fresh today as it was then, Rand's provocative novel presents one of the most challenging ideas in all of fiction--that man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress... "A writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly...This is the only novel of ideas written by an American woman that I can recall."--The New York Times

Who is John Galt? When he says that he will stop the motor of the world, is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he have to fight his battles not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves? You will know the answer to these questions when you discover the reason behind the baffling events that play havoc with the lives of the amazing men and women in this book. You will discover why a productive genius becomes a worthless playboy...why a great steel industrialist is working for his own destruction...why a composer gives up his career on the night of his triumph...why a beautiful woman who runs a transcontinental railroad falls in love with the man she has sworn to kill. Atlas Shrugged, a modern classic and Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism--her groundbreaking philosophy--offers the reader the spectacle of human greatness, depicted with all the poetry and power of one of the twentieth century's leading artists.

Ayn Rand published her book, Anthem, in 1946. In the included foreword she provided, she bemoaned "people who accept collectivism by moral default" despite there being ample evidence of the bloody consequences of that approach. "Those who refuse to see it now are neither blind nor innocent." Sadly, though some seventy years have passed, that evidence has only accumulated and compounded, heaping body upon body, bones upon bones, mass graves over other mass graves. And yet, even now, 'collective' ideologies are still accepted as the 'moral default.' Ayn Rand's prescient book, Anthem, was a warning. But it was a warning unheeded, leaving us to wonder if there is any genocidal calamity that could take place that could shake the foundations of the inclination towards collectivism that we remain awash in.

Anthem: A Chilling Saga of Barbarity of a Totalitarian State in the Name of Reason and Progress
In her dystopian novella *Anthem*, Ayn Rand presents a haunting vision of a future devoid of individuality and personal freedom, set in a collectivist society where the word "I" has been obliterated from existence. The narrative follows the journey of Equality 7-2521, a rebellious individual who discovers the power of self and the concept of personal identity. Rand's lyrical prose and philosophical undertones make for an engaging exploration of objectivism, positing the inherent value of the individual against the backdrop of a conformist society, ultimately advocating for the pursuit of one's own happiness and purpose. Ayn Rand, a Russian-American writer and philosopher, crafted *Anthem* during a time of great political upheaval in the early 20th century, influenced by her own experiences of totalitarianism in Soviet Russia. Her commitment to individualism and capitalism is evidenced throughout this novella, reflecting her belief that society should foster rather than suppress personal achievement and ambition. Rand's philosophical insights resonate deeply, revealing the tenets of her objectivist philosophy through her protagonist's journey of self-discovery. *Anthem* is highly recommended for readers interested in political philosophy, individualism, and the critique of collectivism. Its succinct narrative and profound themes make it an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of personal freedom and the importance of the self in a world often bent on conformity.
