This book is relevant to any student of Karate who would like a more detailed understanding of the Japanese language, or a more extensive source of Japanese terms as used in Karate.The first part of the book gives explanations of basic Japanese grammar, covering sentence structure, verb forms, and the use of adjectives. There is also an abbreviated history of the Japanese language, and a description of its writing system.The second part of the book gives information on the Japanese terms that are used in Karate classes and textbooks. The kanji or kana is given for each term, as well as the romanisation. Where relevant, the etymology of a word or details about how the word is used in other martial arts or languages is also given.This book may also be relevant to students of Japanese martial arts other than Karate. A number of terms used in Karate are also used in Judo and Jujutsu. This book may even be relevant to students of Korean martial arts, such as Tangsudo and Taekwondo, which are related to Karate and which borrow much of its terminology.

Note that this book is not about the series of eight forms practised by students of Kukki-won Taekwondo.Funakoshi Yoshitaka, son of Funakoshi Gichin, the founder of Shoto-kan Karate, developed a series of three basic forms, which he gave the name Taikyoku. Early Taekwondo practitioners who studied under Funakoshi Gichin learnt these forms and went on to teach them as part of Taekwondo, in which they are called Taegeuk.Today, the Taegeuk forms are still practised in Cheongdo-kwan Taekwondo and Tangsudo, but they have also influenced the development of more modern forms. This book details the movements of the Taegeuk forms for those students who are practising them, and discusses their place in the history of Taekwondo.

A 'lost' form is a form that was once practised often by the students of a martial art, but which in time has been forgotten, and information about it lost. Taekwondo is a relatively new martial art - being only sixty years old as of 2015. However, in that time, there are a few forms which have been forgotten.Unam is one such 'lost' form.
