Un-Natural Discourse in the Age of Anthropogenic Landscapes
Our relationship with wildlife and wild spaces is shifting from a dominion over nature to one that strives for coexistence; yet this coexistence is typically fragmented and, with many wildlife species, relies on tautologies that reinforce unnatural metaphors and stories that keep us outside of nature. To assist in identifying common ground amidst competing users of our shared landscapes, Un-Natural Discourse in the Age of Anthropogenic Landscapes: How We Imagine Wildlife considers how the language we use can challenge our ability to coexist with wild nature. When we say a bison is livestock we diminish its wildness, while a beaver as a pest marginalizes it to exist outside of our Anthropogenic landscapes or to not exist at all. Since language forms meaning, Jones argues how by relying on unnatural discourse to relate to the natural world, coexistence can become much more difficult to achieve.

Mrs. Barbara JonesI grew up in Lenox, Tennessee, a small farming community in Dyer County. I was truly a country girl. My Dad was a sharecropper, and my mother worked in a school cafeteria. We all worked in fields of cotton, corn, and tomatoes. After graduating from Dyersburg High School, I met and married my husband. He had already received a degree from a Bible College. We started working on our goals to become teachers. I received my BSE from Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee. We both received our Master's Degree from Memphis State University. My husband was a minister and a school administrator. I lost him to cancer in 1995, at the age of 61.I have had a lifelong passion for books. I taught 5th Grade for thirty years. I read to my students for 15 minutes every day after lunch. Many of my former students have told me that they were inspired to become readers. The Co-writer of this book is a former 5th Grade student dating back to the early 1960's.David E. BrooksI was raised on a farm in a small community called Barbwire, Tennessee. I chopped cotton, corn, or whatever else Dad had planted. My calling was always to be a teacher. The inspiration behind my calling to teach was my 5th Grade teacher, and coauthor of this book, Mrs. Barbara Jones.

Christo Brand was a South African farm boy, born into the Afrikaans culture which had created apartheid to persecute black people and claim superiority for whites. Nelson Mandela, also raised in a rural village, was the black son of a tribal chief. He trained as a lawyer to take up the fight against apartheid on behalf of a whole nation. Their opposing worlds collided when Christo, a raw recruit from the country's prison service, was sent to Robben Island to guard the notoriously dangerous terrorists there. Mandela was their undisputed leader. The two of them, a boy of 18 and a long-suffering freedom fighter then aged 60, could well have become bitter enemies. Instead, they formed an extraordinary friendship through small human kindnesses. Christo, a gentle young man who valued ordinary decency and courtesy, struck a chord with the wise and resilient old freedom fighter who was prepared to die to liberate his people. The African tribesman in Mandela meant that family was a priority for him, yet he had been sentenced to life imprisonment. When his mother died, he was refused permission to go to her funeral. Mandela, the oldest son whose responsibility was written in blood, wept with shame and despair. Christo was to witness that despair many times during his years as Mandela's prison warder. When Winnie secretly brought their tiny granddaughter to Robben Island it was Christo who risked his own freedom to put the baby in Mandela's arms. Their friendship was sealed by many such shared moments. And the bond of trust between the two men extended beyond Mandela's prison years. As President of South Africa, he called for Christo and gave him a job in the archives department in Parliament. He invited Christo and his family into his home and advised his two sons on their careers. A few weeks before his death, Mandela made another call, to say goodbye. This book tells the story of their friendship in Christo's words for the first time.
