A historical novel set between the years 1820 and 1838 detailing the agony of the last turbulent years of the Cherokee nations existence in northwest Georgia before their forced deportation outside the borders of the United States. Katie, a journalism major at the University of Chattanooga, is puzzled. Why is northwest Georgia filled with Indian place names but no Indians? Why is everyone ignorant of antebellum American history? Where did the Cherokee Indians go? Why did they leave Georgia? In Oklahoma an old Cherokee woman giver Katie a journal written in northwest Georgia 1820-1838, by an educated Cherokee woman. The journal was written where Katie was reared, when that part of Georgia was known as Cherokee Country. Katie is fascinated by the meticulous, well-written document. She redoubles her efforts to understand Georgia history and discover the truth about the disappearance of the Cherokee.

The ordinary man's decision comes in direct conflict with the Book Dragon's hatred of books, bookshelves and reading from every home. The Book Dragon cares nothing for the free exchange of ideas.
