Hollanninjuutalainen filosofi Baruch Spinoza tunnettaneen parhaiten teoksestaan Etiikka (1677). Yhtä tärkeänä voi kuitenkin pitää hänen Teologis-poliittista tutkielmaansa (1670), joka alun perin julkaistiin vailla tekijän nimeä. Spinoza halusi teoksellaan edistää rationaalista ja suvaitsevaista ajattelua, mutta ainakin tuolloin hän epäonnistui tyystin. Teosta pidettiin poliittisesti harhaoppisena, koska valtiovallalle ei suotu siinä minkäänlaista yli-inhimillistä auktoriteettia. Vielä enemmän pahennusta aiheutti se, että Spinoza tulkitsi Raamatun tekstejä aivan omalla tavallaan. Niin juutalaiset, protestantit kuin katolilaiset pitivät kirjaa rienaavana ja vaarallisena. Nykyään Teologis-poliittinen tutkielma tunnetaan yhtenä klassisena suvaitsemattomuuden kritiikkinä ja maallisen hallinnon puolustuksena. Kirjan ensimmäiset kaksi kolmannesta keskittyvät teologisiin ja uskonnollisiin aiheisiin ja loppuosa on omistettu politiikan teorialle.
