Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris asked for this new album to be created as a companion piece to their forthcoming book The Book of Birds. They have worked closely with the 7 featured folk/world musicians (Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Kris Drever, Seckou Ketia, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux) to create a mixed media book and CD which brings together writing, art, music and nature. The album itself takes the form of a beautifully designed square box filled with art cards featuring newly commissioned art by Jackie Morris, a hard back CD book with newly commissioned art by Jackie, documentary photography of the collaborative process, a comprehensive article by Robert Macfarlane discussing the ways in which different art forms can inspire one another as well as beautiful writing from each of the musicians. The CD itself is housed within the CD Book. There is also a pull out (concertina) artwork of a migration by Jackie Morris created especially for this mixed media book. The Book of Birds (this album's inspiration) is a love letter to the splendours and mysteries of birdlife, and a clarion call to halt the loss of birds from land, sea and sky. Both the book and this new album are a poetic and creative response to the great thinning of our skies. "This album is a tremendous and powerful thing...singing bright and fierce right into our contemporary moment". Robert Macfarlane

Ecosystems require balance to survive, and when that balance is compromised, disaster can befall the whole system. To keep a balance in our global ecosystem, we need to use resources efficiently, equitably, and sustainably. In both nature and economics, we observe that when a healthy distribution of resources is achieved, systems can not only function but flourish. The United States recycles roughly 34% of its waste and has been stuck at this level for decades. Recycling brings a balance to our system by managing resources in a loop. When done well, it benefits communities and the environment. Individuals are a key part of connecting this loop because we provide a supply of materials and a demand for new recycled products. But many of us don’t know what happens after those items leave our homes. We’re confused by inconsistent rules of what we can and can’t recycle. Our confusion has huge consequences and is a reason why our recycling is stuck. Throughout Reduce, Reuse, Reimagine, Beth Porter provides answers to clear up that confusion, and shares great resources about recycling, explaining the complexity, guiding individual action, and contextualizing its history. This book reveals how we arrived at this state of dysfunction, and what steps we need to employ to be an active participant in strengthening our recycling system. Nature knows how to recycle itself, decomposing waste back into the soil to continue the circle of growth. We should follow its lead.

From the moment of their birth The Twins were ravenous, demanding to be fed. Born of a single seed no bigger than the freckle on your chin, they grew to claim their legacy, their power. This tale strips away the niceties in Myth and Meme, Culture and Consequence, down to the common horror we must learn to love. Feed them

Beth Porter presents The Net Effect exploring not just how it evolved and what it does, but how it relates to the way we live. Most writing about the Net focuses on a particular aspect: its use for business, its driving technology, etc. This book aims at a broader target. It does contain some useful information about the How of the Internet, but it is more concerned with the Why of it.
