It was hot and crowed when my Grandmomma and I got to church, and somebody was sitting in her seat. When the usher directed us to the empty seats on the seventh pew my Grandmomma blurted out "those seats are fine for seein but not for sittin" That at Miss Shoog is too loud even for the Lord". I paid no attention to Grandmomma's ways of behaving when it came to Miss Shoog. I believed Miss Shoog was one of God's special people, and that empty space next to her was sent by Him for me.

The play, "Do Jewish Lives Matter" arose out of the Crown Heights Riot in Brooklyn, a Pogrom where a Black boy was accidentally killed by a Hasidic driver with devastating results. James Baldwin, the famous Negro writer, as far back as 1948 wrote, "Georgia has the Negro as a target of hatred. Harlem has the Jew."In 1973 Rabbi Kahane wrote, "In no way should we refuse to see the danger to Jews that comes from Black hatred. It is of epidemic proportions." And again in 1977, when addressing an audience, he said, "In Crown Heights, where poor Jews live side by side with Blacks and are regularly robbed, mugged, terrorized, a Black explosion against them is inevitable."

Hideaway: Fiction

Hideaway: Fiction

A riveting series of fiction based on the mythical town called Hideaway.Betteen, now in her 60s, sits down to tell the visitor about the secret town called Hideaway. Its legendary orgins are linked to namesake Cecil Hideaway, a church, and four houses on each side of a mythical Mama tree. Surrounding that landscape are 13 engaging chronicles-filled with beauty and darkness-about the neighbors' domestic encounters, spiritual upheavals, and unexpected violence. Speaking in the plain and non-standard English of regular Southern folk, Betteen describes the characters and events of her Hideaway with language that features idiomatic phrases and pronunciations that are magnetically engaging. In fact, her voice is as riveting as the events themselves and are a special treasure for readers. In her marvelous character portraits, her stylistic dependence on the gnomic tradition gives her narrative a voice quality that corresponds with classic black fiction like Jean Toomer's Cane and Amos Tutuola's The Palm-Wine Drinkard. At then end, with the dramatic dissolution of her relationship with Randell, she leaves listeners with a profoundly spiritual lesson about how a neighborhood can represent through both beauty and darkness, the fears, comedy, and tragedies that we all must face. She ends with, "He gave us what we needed every day in a secret place called Hideaway."

The contributors to this volume represent acknowledged experts in the field as well as a number of promising young scholars. They provide a thorough examination of how Romantic authors grappled with the problem of describing the connections between consciousness, unconsciousness, and language in their endeavor to capture this interplay in their art. As this collection bears witness, the Romantics sought to discard old ideas about language and literature and to mold new forms in their search to recover, in both literature and life, the sense of human possiblity. The essays, while strikingly diverse in topic and approach, explore this broad issue and come to a surprisingly similar conclusion: for Romantic writers, genuine consciousness, whatever it might imply about self-awareness, not only made it possible for an individual to affiliate with something outside himself, but even made such bonding necessary.
