Bert Coombes settled in south Wales in 1909, where he worked as a miner for more than forty years. He was motivated to write after witnessing the death of two work mates underground, and he determined to tell his truth about the lives of miners and their families. His first book These Poor Hands was acclaimed by critics such as J. B. Priestley and Cyril Connolly and is considered to be among the most authentically vivid accounts ever written about mining. It describes with moving simplicity the harsh conditions in which he and his comrades worked and lived and the bond which existed between them in the face of poverty, hunger, danger and death. These Poor Hands was followed by several other books, all consistent in their philosophy, style and integrity - there is no hint of sentimentality, just immense sympathy for the miners' lot, its hardship and its humour. As the Times Literary Supplement noted in 1974, 'he was one of the few proletarian writers of the 1930s who were impressive as writers rather than proletarians'. As a result of his success Coombes became a frequent broadcaster and his Plan for Britain was published in the Picture Post. This excellent introduction to the life and work of Bert Coombes is valuable not just for its penetrating assessment of Coombes, but for the light that it sheds on the social and industrial context in which he lived. His writing articulated the social and economic injustice of contemporary capitalism and has enduring value because of the way in which it gives imaginative expression to the belief that working people should have greater control over their well-being and destiny.

‘Just Like Us’?: The Politics of Ministerial Promotion in UK Government
Informed by interviews with key political figures and commentators, this entertaining and enlightening book exposes the influences, processes and motivations behind ministerial promotion in British government. It identifies and analyses the political sinews that have influenced the selection and upward progression of our rulers since the middle of the last century. Given that politics is fuelled by ambition, it provides commentary on how this often-criticised emotional drive can work positively in practice, motivating politicians to strive constantly for advancement in their quest for power and achievement. Drawing upon many biographies, it explains how politics is essentially about the strengths and frailties of the people who occupy positions of power. It illustrates that climbing up that greasy pole is dependent upon a number of key character traits of politicians: their strength of desire; their abilities/skills as communicators, managers and administrators; the ways in which fate throws up opportunities; and the raw courage of politicians in confronting these challenges. Ultimately, the book illuminates the abiding obsessions of that tiny but potent minority in democratic societies who dare to dream they can rule over us.This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and anyone interested in British political history, biography and the politics of executive government.

The Beatitudes: 13 Messages to Help You Reach Your Greatest Fulfillment as a Child of God
The beatitudes are a set of assertions that Jesus gave for all believers. They are actually the preamble to a larger message known as the Sermon on the Mount. To be poor in spirit is to acknowledge one's spiritual poverty, which will enable one to connect with God and enjoy His reign. To mourn or realize one's wretchedness, will open up doors to receive God's comfort. To be gentle is the way to conquer the earth. To hunger and thirst after righteousness is a prerequisite to being satisfied. To show mercy enables one to receive mercy. To be pure in heart helps one to experience the reality of God. To be a peacemaker is befitting of the character of God and shows one how to be a child of God. Kingdom people can endure persecution for righteous sake, for they have great rewards. Christ did not intend these to be a set of rules for believers to do to receive God's blessings in the future, but rather an introduction to the characteristics that covenant people should already be practicing. The present tense in each of the beatitudes indicates that they are to be present within the people of the God's Kingdom. We are often mistaken that the promise that each assertion carries is for the future in Gods heavenly kingdom, somewhere in the sweet by and by. They certainly will make sense for the future which God has promised, but in Christ Jesus the future has arrived. And in Him we are called to live out these glorious assertions. So, let us live them out and experience the goodness of God here and now

The Ministry Multiplication Cycle

The Ministry Multiplication Cycle

After harmonizing the four Gospels into one unified story, the author examines the ministry of Jesus to see what we can learn today for our own churches and ministries. As the story unfolds, one finds Jesus implementing four strategic ministry tactics, in this order: -Outsiders becoming new believers through evangelism -New believers becoming committed disciples through establishing -Committed disciples becoming effective workers through equipping -Effective workers becoming world Christians through missions mobilization Together these four tactics form the ""ministry multiplication cycle."" To determine whether this strategy is truly a biblical strategy or not, an in-depth look is then taken into the book of Acts. There we find the apostles, the men whom Jesus trained, implementing these same four tactics in the exact same order, with the exact same results--powerful growth through multiplication. The question remains whether the ministry multiplication cycle can be replicated today in our own culture. The answer is a resounding ""yes,"" when we learn to think in terms of principles and not just practices. This book is a product of over thirty years of clarifying these principles in the classroom and implementing them around the world, the latter resulting in over two thousand churches being planted among unreached people groups.

A poignant memoir that recounts the author's hair-raising--and occasionally hilarious--experiences as a young, not especially gung-ho Marine artilleryman in Vietnam. Gritty and disturbing, Bill Jones' unvarnished narrative probes the lasting physical and emotional wounds of war and offers a combat veteran's wry insight into the influence and relevance of America's long and indecisive misadventure.

"Siri Malkia sat on a wooden throne overlooking a burning sea. It had not been afire when she found it. It had been only part of the pointless dream of some mindless daydreamer. However, she had put it to good use. It was now aflame, fumes of burning kerosene choking the otherwise pristine evening air. The smell reminded her of the city. The sun had set, and the glow from the fiery sea was enchanting, like arson on a cold, winter's night. Moreover, unlike her African home, there was no rush of evening insects here. The noxious fumes from her Hellfire Sea had poisoned them."And thus, the Circle of Life is ... corrected. Take one pointless sea filled with mosquito larvae and convert it into a lovely bug-repellant. That it serves as a nightlight is charming serendipity."In small-town Virginia, sixteen-year-old Charlie Patterson is hunting creatures that have escaped from the dream world, the Stream. With his partner, Robin LeBeaux, he discovers that something is tearing apart the gateway that separates dreams from reality, and even life from death.
