The 1917 Halifax Explosion all but destroyed a thriving book-publishing industry centred in Halifax and Saint John. In the wake of the devastation, dozens of periodicals emerged in its place, reshaping the social, cultural, and political landscape across the east coast and sparking literary and political discussions that reached beyond the space levelled by the catastrophe.Publishing Place is both a critical study of periodical form and a cultural history of publishing on the east coast between 1895 and 1935. Billy Johnson examines representative examples – cultural magazines such as Acadiensis, radical publications including the Black-nationalist magazine Neith, and the socialist weekly Maritime Labour Herald – arguing that these periodicals constituted a distinct genre in which literary expression was able to mould collective identities. More than any other medium, periodicals provided writers with a forum to discuss, debate, and create, thus voicing emergent conceptions of place, region, and nation. Johnson’s rediscovery of these periodicals fills in a missing chapter of Canadian literature; he also explores their contributions to major intellectual and philosophical movements such as interwar liberalism, socialist feminism, Black nationalism, and regionalism.East-coast periodicals were deeply embedded in the global flows of twentieth-century modernity. Publishing Place demonstrates that they were archetypes for how new ideas of place and identity circulated in print beyond Canda’s urban centres.

Murder on the Bahama Princess is a cozy murder mystery set in the Caribbean. Gidget thinks a cruise will cure her long-standing mid-life crisis. Life in a small Southern town can be dreary, even with a friend like Daffy. They meet five older bachelors who invite them on a cruise. Both women are wealthy widows who decide to accept the old boys offer. Gidget finds some relief from her melancholy until all five travel companions begin to die or disappear mysteriously. The amateur detective puts on her Sherlock Holmes hat in this whodunit but comes up against sinister forces unlike any the great detective ever faced. Their situation is complicated by ominous strangers, attacks by fish, a malfunction on a zipline ride, and a coup d'etat in Haiti. Despite all this, Gidget and Daffy experience a cruise full of romance, humor, and homicide in another Casserole Ladies misadventure.

Life in a small Southern town can be melancholy if you are female, old, and unmarried. What can you do about it? If you are Daffy, Babs, Gidget, Lilly, and Lizzie, you start with a voodoo love ritual at midnight in a cemetery. While you are at it, you might even go to a gay nudist colony. These are just the start of many out of the ordinary farcical situations these ladies experience in their quest for romance. Think suicidal sexbot, Internet dating with a twist, and unintentional catastrophes in both space exploration and German agriculture. To make their crusade more difficult, they must compete with four archrivals for the limited supply of suitable bachelors in their hometown of Thomasville, Georgia. Their competitors are not only unmarried, they are also nasty, conniving, and hinder the Casserole Ladies' pursuit of marital bliss. Non-stop zany amorous misadventures lead to the story's climax. A bet to end all bets results in our five ladies running for their honor on national television at the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. After they go down in a blaze of glory to the men in blue, they experience an epiphany about love, men, and friendship in a surprising place.
