Sedes SapientiÆ

Sedes SapientiÆ

Fraternity Of St Vincent Ferrer; Bishop Athanasius Schneider; Louis-Marie de Blignieres

In this second English-language issue of Sedes Sapienti , two prominent themes emerge. First, Fr. de Bligni res and Joseph Shaw debate the feasibility of establishing an "ordinariate," i.e., a canonical structure with a bishop, to harbor traditional Catholics. This constructive solution to the current predicament of traditionalists stands in contrast to critical or defensive postures that "custodians of Tradition" have generally been constrained to adopt. Bishop Athanasius Schneider broaches the second principal theme of this issue, the religious life, with his personal testimony as a canon regular, which is complemented by a captivating portrait of the late Dominican friar, Fr. Tom s T n, by a Carmelite Sister. Fr. Aidan Nichols, O.P., introduces the reader to a sharp discussion among Thomists on the sins of the angels. Noteworthy, too, is the somber reflection on Archbishop Lefebvre's 1988 consecrations co-written by two founders of Ecclesia Dei communities, as well as Fr. Reginald Rivoire's Thomistic exposition of "rationality" in canon law, which follows up on his highly acclaimed canonical analysis of Traditionis Custodes. On a lighter note, the reader may alight upon an English lay-brother's whimsical commentary on the greatest of Chesterton's poems, or a review and chapter of the first English translation of the most ancient biography of St. Thomas Aquinas.*****Sedes Sapienti is a quarterly review published in French and dedicated to Christian formation. Founded more than thirty-five years ago by the Fraternity of Saint Vincent Ferrer, it is placed under the protection of Our Lady, "Seat of Wisdom" (Sedes Sapienti in Latin) and of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Its aim is to help Christians deepen their religious knowledge by forming their intelligences in the light of the common Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas, and to contribute to religious debates in fidelity to Catholic Tradition and the Church's magisterium. Sedes Sapienti has many English-speaking friends and benefactors around the world. We are happy to thank them by offering this special issue to the public.

What Readers Are Saying about "Traddy Daddy" "Joseph has written a remarkable and compelling second memoir containing great pearls of wisdom, timeless truths shared with wit and candour, and an ever sound commentary on our contemporary ills, all delivered in the best way: through the lens of a well-formed layman's deep Catholic faith." -Edward Pentin, National Catholic Register "The terrifying tutelage of Sr Immaculata, the priest so tipsy he slips back into Latin, and Fr 'call me Eddie': Joseph again permits us to peep into the inner workings of the Bevan clan and brings us up to date with wayward pontiffs, wokery, and the need to trust in the mercy of God. A second very engaging work, it does not disappoint " -Dom Cuthbert Brogan, OSB, St Michael's Abbey, Farnborough "Joseph Bevan instructs and entertains with stories from his often-confusing childhood as well as his cherished days raising a family. Joe's books are an honest reminder that while the pursuit of sanctity always has to jostle with human frailty and a gamut of passions, God's grace wins out in the end." - Kathy Clubb, founder and editor of the Freedoms Project, Australia "Joseph Bevan's recollections are an important witness to the ancient Catholic faith which, despite the ravages of the post-Vatican II era, persists in England to this day. They are also a tribute and a warning to the Catholic community in England and beyond." -Dorothy Cummings McLean, LifeSiteNews "Joseph Bevan's book is a piercing testimony to the mockery of religion that the Catholic Church became after the Second Vatican Council, and to the sufferings of those faithful Catholics who, as a persecuted minority, tried to uphold what had been taught and practiced semper, ubique, ab omnibus." -Henry Sire, author of Phoenix from the Ashes "Parents have but one opportunity to form their children in the Faith. Attending to this solemn duty in an epoch of cultural, moral, and ecclesial disintegration is even more challenging-perhaps the work of true saints? Joseph Bevan would not describe himself as a saint, but he would hope that, in spite of everything-himself included-he has come to strive for sanctity in his vocation as a husband and a father. His gritty determination has paid off. With God's grace, this perseverance has brought forth real fruit even when the climate and the soil have been less than optimal. There is much for all of us to learn in these pages." -Dom Alcuin Reid, Prior, Monast re Saint-Beno t, Brignoles

The faithful deprived of the Mass. Persecution and removal of clergy. Promulgation of communism and rampant heresies. Dehumanization, dictatorship, and the destruction of life.Bishop Athanasius Schneider experienced these sufferings growing up in the 1960s in the former Soviet Union, and they are now a reality in the West. A witness to the truth passed down from the apostles, Bishop Schneider explains that, especially since the time of the French Revolution, natural law, order, and a sense of the supernatural have been eroded and replaced, through Freemasonry and other false ideologies, with widespread apostasy, to the point where society is now almost entirely devoid of God.This riveting and climactic interview with Bishop Schneider tackles each and every controversial issue of our time. With charity, wisdom, and occasional humor, Bishop Schneider provides a rich historical and theological perspective with straightforward answers to a profusion of startling questions on topics such as ecumenism, ecology, Mass reforms, the German Church, Hell, Purgatory, sin, heresy, the roles of women in the Church, the traditional liturgy, and much more Amid the encircling darkness, this compendium of straight, authoritative answers elucidates the truths of our Faith with a piercing light. It will make you cheer as it reorients you on your journey with Christ. Be encouraged, as Bishop Schneider provides inspiring insights for the battle. Be enthused to uphold Church teachings and worship God no matter the challenges that may lie ahead. Be strengthened to trust God and follow the examples of the saints. He teaches us to avoid the 1/2 1/2 1/2mental gymnastics 1/2 1/2 1/2 caused by theological confusion and assures us that souls return to the Church through repentance and reverence for the Blessed Sacrament, Eucharistic Adoration and processions, Confession, and the Holy Rosary. The Catholic Mass: Steps to Restore the Centrality of God in the Liturgy

The Catholic Mass: Steps to Restore the Centrality of God in the Liturgy

We are going through a period of liturgical exile, explains Bishop Athanasius Schneider in this enlightening book, and the vast proliferation of modern abuses are crying out for liturgical reform. The primary source of most modern abuses, he declares, is man's narcissistic tendency to idolize himself instead of paying homage to God.In what is sure to be seen as one of the most impressive and authoritative books ever written on the Catholic Mass, Bishop Schneider reestablishes what Catholics have known for centuries but have largely forgotten today: that the Mass is the highest form of Christian prayer, which enables us to express with exterior worship our interior belief. He describes how saints such as Padre Pio and John Vianney helped the faithful enter into a profound spiritual experience during Mass, and he explains why the Mass should serve as a means to lift our hearts to God so we can surrender to His will. You'll come to understand why the rubrics are vital to preserving the authenticity of the liturgy, and you'll learn why architecture, music, sacred art, and even incense are vital symbols that direct our attention to Heaven. You'll also learn: How to recollect and listen to God's Word properlyThe keys to lifting your heart and surrendering to God's will at Mass. Why it's essential to celebrate the Mass ad orientemHow following the rituals assists you in contemplating the spiritualWays you can unite yourself to the sacrifice of Christ on the CrossThe most profitable ways of spending time in thanksgiving following Holy CommunionBishop Schneider and coauthor Aurelio Porfiri encourage the revival of public prayers, such as the Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharistic adoration. He explains how genuflecting, kneeling, and prostrating oneself are all outward signs of reverence that demonstrate this inward action. Our duty, he declares, is to render "perpetual thanksgiving" to God at Mass. Indeed, as he solemnly asserts, "The Mass is the greatest and most important work of the Church."

This catechism can be considered as a valid and effective catechetical tool for the work of the evangelization, a work which has to be realized with a new missionary zeal towards those who don't know the Catholic faith and as well towards those who know it defectively and insufficiently. May those who will read this catechism and those who will use it in the noble and meritorious work of teaching Christian doctrine, may be equipped with the sure and sacred doctrine of the Catholic faith, in order to stand, having their loins girt about with truth. -Bishop Athanasius Schneider This is the first English translation of St. Robert Bellarmine's Long Catechism, which follows a traditional question and answer model but gives deep meditations on the truths of faith. It was written for students with some education as well as for those who would teach Catechism. It was explicitly approved by Pope Clement VIII and praised by Pope Benedict XIV and Pius XI. St. Robert Bellarmine is a doctor of the Church.
