Humans are confusing, according to Xaphan, a fallen angel new to Earth. Unable to hid their angelic wings, Xaphan is forced to stay at home unless fighting crime with their superhero team: The Renegades. Until now. A chance encounter with the Egyptian god Setesh has shown Xaphan that it is possible to hide their angelic nature and live among humans. Setesh is even willing to teach Xaphan how to do it. But gods of chaos never do anything for free, and what Setesh wants in exchange could change the balance of power on Earth forever.

Valerie never wanted to be a hero. And now she's tired of pretending to be something she's not. When an offer comes to move halfway around the world, to a place where she would be free, wouldn't have to worry about the Hero Society trying to arrest her, and would get to return to the work she loves as a scientist, Valerie leaps at the opportunity. But things could never be that simple, and as Valerie starts to become aware of just what is happening in the nation of Rontanista she starts worrying that maybe the reason there are no heroes is because the country is run by a villain.
