Under hans lyriske og barokke skildringer af livet i hjembyen Drohobycz løber en understrøm af erotik, syndsbevidsthed og drømme. Som tegner bliver Schulz ofte sammenlignet med Goya, Chagall og Munch. Ud af de breve han skrev til den jødiske forfatterinde Deborah Vogel voksede hans første bog, novellesamlingen Kanelbutikkerne (1934). Tre år senere udkom Sanatoriet under timeglasset, hans anden og sidste bog. Med anden verdenskrig gik den provinsielle og dog eventyrlige verden som Schulz beskrev i sine fortællinger under. Schulz var jøde og blev i 1942 skudt på åben gade i ghettoen i Drohobycz af en tysk SS-officer. Flere efterladte manuskripter gik desværre tabt for eftertiden. Kanelbutikkerne udkom i dansk oversættelse i 1964. Sanatoriet under timeglasset foreligger nu for første gang på dansk. Bogen er rigt illustreret af forfatteren selv og forsynet med et efterord af Karsten Sand Iversen.
