Remember that day that you lay in the grass, on a distant hill, alone, hands behind your head, watching the clouds drift slowly across the sky? You were younger, more carefree, less inhibited or worried about bugs or itchiness. Now, imagine the opposite. Imagine that cloud drifting across the sky, pushed along by the winds of chance and fate, seeing you. Imagine having no control over where you go in life, no choice, no freedom. Imagine the unfulfilled desires, the wishes that were only such, the dreams of what you want going unrealized. Imagine...
From Here to There has two stories of possibilities and potential. In "The Race," a grandson discovers something about life as he and his grandfather march toward a racetrack. In "Why Me?" a solitary troublemaker has a change of heart as he finds himself in trouble and needing help.
This book is my second collection of 22 short stories. I use fiction to explore the important things in our lives in my life: a grandfather's relationship with his grandson, the energy and excitement of youth; death, our belief that it just won't happen to us, and a glimpse into the time afterwards; chaos and destruction happening to unsettle our lives and take away what we have, the hope for a new tomorrow, a new sunrise, a new day; the choices we make in life and how they affect us, living for the moment, preparing for the future; being alone, loneliness, the fear of having no one to share our frustrations and joys with; seeing ourselves as we are, as we want to be, as others perceive us; a mother's feelings toward her children, a child's reaction to abandonment; the necessary and somewhat silly reactions we have to life.A variety of characters take us through the woods, down trails, and into our own minds: spiders and snakes, the old and the young, male and females, fish and frogs, ants and wasps, pigeons, a mirror, a tree. How, you ask, can a snake's words or actions tell me something about myself, how I feel, how I handle adversity? Read and you will discover.Life is lived by walking along a trail. Sometimes that trail is smooth and easily traversed, while other times it is full of ankle-twisting rocks and turns and switchbacks that confuse and distract you. At times it is canopied with towering shade-providing oaks, while other times you are forced to endure the scorching heat of the sun. Occasionally it is paved in concrete, easily seen and followed, with benches and water fountains and a hand-rail of steel to guide you, while other times you must pound the dust of the trail, getting dirty while stepping through thorny vines and past poisonous ivy, sometimes losing sight of the trail and having to chop and hack your way through. That's life. It's a trail that both tests and rewards those who keep walking. This book, Concrete and Steel, tells stories of doing so, of walking, and sometimes running. I hope that you enjoy it.If you are curious, then take a look at these books: Concrete and DirtConcrete and SteelMemories Cannot Be Washed Away
This collection offers an intimate glimpse into my inner world through a tapestry of short stories, poems, and personal reflections. The writings range from imaginative tales of talking animals to poignant memories from my own life's journey. Throughout the book, thoughtful existential themes emerge as I grapple with loneliness, fear, wonder, and what it means to live an authentic life. The stories transport readers into the minds of diverse creatures, from bees to badgers, who search for connection. The poems capture fleeting moments of beauty, like a butterfly dancing across a field. And the nonfiction pieces reveal my own struggles and triumphs along the winding trail of life. I bare my soul as I describe pivotal events and ruminate on the role of faith, hope and inner strength when facing trials. While crafted as entertaining fiction, many stories parallel my personal search for meaning. The writings become a means to make sense of both sorrow and joy. I find inspiration in the loyalty of friends, the steadfastness of family, and the simple acts of kindness that uplift the spirit. For any reader seeking respite from life's noise, these stories offer a retreat into the wonder of nature, the power of imagination and the resilience of the human heart. Ideal for nature lovers, lifelong learners and philosophical souls, this book weaves together inspiration, insight and imagination. Each page reflects my belief in savoring the journey, living fully in the present, and embracing life's possibilities. I invite you to walk with me through these tales and find connection, wisdom, and maybe even a touch of magic. Concrete and DirtConcrete and SteelMemories Cannot Be Washed Away
Romantics and Renegades examines the abiding crux of romantic criticism: the political apostasies of the Lake poets (Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey) as they renounced the revolutionary Jacobinism of their youth in the 1790s in order to claim the high ground of Regency Toryism in the 1810s. Central to this scandal is the figure of William Hazlitt, the literary critic who policed their betrayals in his vigilant exposure of their political and poetical inconsistencies. Mahoney's analysis provides new insight into this abiding critical riddle through close historical and figural readings of the rhetoric of romantic apostasy.
