Despite growing international interest in the position and power of the Japanese prime minister, there is little existing research on what happens after these figures leave office. Examining both pre-war and post-war Japan, this book investigates what Japanese prime ministers have done after stepping down and what influence they have continued to exert. Based on research in English and Japanese including biographies, memoirs and interviews, the book examines the specific activities former prime ministers engage in, assessing their motivations and the effect of informal politics in Japan on their successes and failures. Ultimately, the book answers the simple but often unanswered question of ‘where are they now’ and writes the unwritten post-resignation biographies of Japan’s prime ministers.

I'd like to tell you a story. It's a fairy tale of sorts...At the age of twenty-seven, Caroline Rose was finishing her first year of medical school and in the best shape of her life when she was shockingly diagnosed with a highly aggressive, incurable, stage IV cancer. At the age of one, Riley, a Great Dane/Labrador mix, was rescued from inhumane abuse. An Internet search of rescue dogs during Caroline's first remission led her to a picture a large broken dog with empty eyes that resembled her own. One impulsive decision later, Riley became a Rose. This is the story of two lost souls coming together as one and their journey together through family, love, loss, pain, and hope.Dear Riley Rose radiates the humor of Riley's antics during even the toughest of times and illustrates the courage it takes for every being to rise up and choose life in the face of adversity.Love heals us. Hope carries us. But is that enough for us to believe in a happy ending?

Interpreting History in Sino-Japanese Relations
The first book-length study to examine the re-writing of school textbooks by the Japanese Education Ministry in an attempt to play down atrocities in China during World War II. The famous textbook crisis in 1982 was at the centre of a diplomatic storm extending through the 1980s as Sino-Japanese relations were beset by a series of political controversies. This fascinating account of the period reveals that Chinese and Japanese policy-makers were more concerned with changes taking place in international and domestic politics than with adopting a correct view of history.

Caroline Rose presents a thorough, balanced and objective examination of both sides of the relationship. This will be of great interest to academics and policy-makers in the UK and US, as well as to professionals working in Chinese and Japanese communities.
