The censuses for the first fifty years of Cabell County, Virginia are thoroughly compiled in this publication, making it a highly valuable tool for anyone doing genealogical research on this area of West Virginia. Beginning with the 1850 census, the study works its way backward through the 1840 census, the 1830 and 1820 alphabetical censuses, and finally the 1815 and 1810 tax lists. The author also includes four appendices, providing a bibliography as well as information on the redivision of the Savage Grant, an index of cemeteries in the county, and location maps. This work is concluded by an index arranged alphabetically by surname.

Slavery, manumission, the Baptist Church, and the Underground Railroad have been a major part of American History.The future without slavery began in the Northwest Territory only after an Ordinance was issued, which declared the new western lands of the United States to be free of slavery. Subsequently, the southeast corner of the region became the State of Ohio in 1803, which was an undeveloped frontier until 1800. This area became Lawrence County, Ohio, the closest "free" area north of the Ohio River to the old south slavery.Limited trails led west, but three ended at the Ohio River in Lawrence County. Manumitted Blacks settled in the county where they began the oldest Black Church in Ohio. They also created and maintained a "Black" trail of freedom, often called the Underground Railroad. Despite restricting Black Laws and the harassment by local slave catchers, these people risked their lives to live in an area where they could aid other people in escaping slavery.Freedom Lies Across the River is a story of the Black freedom of this region. It provides the reader with numerous maps and an extensive appendix to help them trace their own connections to the area.

Tax lists are an excellent resource often overlooked by researchers. Tax lists provide researchers with the names of persons present in the county at the time the tax was assessed along with a comparison of name spelling. The first section of this valuable research aid covers four tax years (1800, 1801, 1809, and 1811) and includes: the location of properties, the name of the person who first claimed or provided surety, which type of land was taxed, and property value. Entries include year, person, location and water course, and entered/surveyed, as well as number of voters, white males, slaves and horses. The second section compares tax records for eleven years that fall within two census periods. The third section shows an expanded census for 1810, and the fourth section offers the deed book indices of the period for name comparison. An index to tax payers and a map of Nicholas County add to the value of this work.
