Common Battlefield Training for Airmen

Common Battlefield Training for Airmen

Thomas Manacapilli; Chaitra M. Hardison; Brian Gifford; Alexis Bailey; Aimee Bower

RAND
2007
pokkari
Air Force members who do not routinely cross a defended perimeter when deployed may not have received sufficient training for doing so when they need to. The authors conducted surveys and interviews to determine the kinds of experiences airmen have had "outside the wire," worked with subject-matter experts to categorize them and suggest training levels, and developed a series of recommendations for course content and further areas for study.
Addressing Stressors for National Guard Personnel

Addressing Stressors for National Guard Personnel

Chaitra M Hardison; Daniel B Ginsberg

RAND Corporation
2024
pokkari
The high demand for National Guard support of domestic operations has raised concerns about potential impacts for Guard members and their families and a variety of personnel management challenges. The authors explore the National Guard's recent mission demands, identify the challenges that the pace of operations has created for members and their families, and examine what service and support programs are in place to address these challenges.
The Training Needs of the Aircrew Flight Equipment Career Field

The Training Needs of the Aircrew Flight Equipment Career Field

Chaitra M Hardison; Tara L Terry; Lawrence M Hanser

RAND Corporation
2023
pokkari
Aircrew flight equipment (AFE) personnel inspect, repair, maintain, pack, and adjust aircrew flight equipment, which is vital to the safety of the aircrews. In response to U.S. Air Force concerns about proficiency in the career field, the authors conducted a survey of more than 1,000 AFE enlisted personnel to help the career field better justify specific changes to training and personnel management policies.
Increasing Aircrew Flight Equipment Personnel Proficiency

Increasing Aircrew Flight Equipment Personnel Proficiency

Chaitra M Hardison; Leslie Adrienne Payne; Russell H Williams

RAND
2021
nidottu
The Air Force Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) specialty plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of aircraft pilots, other aircrew, and special warfare operators via training and by engaging in maintenance, inspection, repair, and adjustment of aircrew flight equipment, such as flight helmets, parachutes, and safety rafts. The authors investigate the causes for the decline in AFE proficiency and develop courses of action to mitigate the issue.
Attracting, Recruiting, and Retaining Successful Cyberspace Operations Officers

Attracting, Recruiting, and Retaining Successful Cyberspace Operations Officers

Chaitra M Hardison; Leslie Adrienne Payne; John A Hamm

RAND
2019
nidottu
Cyberspace capabilities are critical to national security. However, with a shortage of cyber personnel nationwide and high salaries commanded by some, the Air Force is concerned it may face recruiting and retention challenges within its cyberspace operations officer workforce. To understand potential drivers of attraction to and retention in the career field, researchers conducted interviews with the Air Force's cyberspace operations officer workforce. Recommendations are discussed.
Building a Healthy Mq-1/9 Rpa Pilot Community

Building a Healthy Mq-1/9 Rpa Pilot Community

Tara L. Terry; Chaitra M Hardison; David Schulker; Alexander C Hou; Leslie Adrienne Payne

RAND
2018

The personnel who operate remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) are crucial in the Air Force, but many in the RPA career field are dissatisfied, and it is difficult to train and retain enough pilots to meet the demand. To assist in building a healthy, sustainable RPA career field, RAND has developed a long-term RPA career field planning model. This report explains the model's main features, content, and data inputs and describes key technical aspects.
Methodology for Translating Enlisted Veterans' Nontechnical Skills into Civilian Employers' Terms
Civilian employers may not appreciate the full value veterans can bring to their organizations, because military and civilian workplace cultures and languages can seem radically different from one another. This report describes a methodology for describing the nontechnical skills developed through military training, education, and on-the-job experiences in civilian terms.
Recruiting Policies and Practices for Women in the Military

Recruiting Policies and Practices for Women in the Military

Douglas Yeung; Christina E Steiner; Chaitra M Hardison; Lawrence M Hanser; Kristy N Kamarck

RAND
2017
nidottu
This report helps inform strategies to recruit women through the results of focus groups with recent recruits and recruiters. We recommend that resources be set aside to specifically target outreach to women, that the services increase the proportion of recruiters who are women and increase their visibility at recruiting events, and that the services work to reduce administrative burdens on recruiters and recruits.
Stress and Dissatisfaction in the Air Force's Remotely Piloted Aircraft Community

Stress and Dissatisfaction in the Air Force's Remotely Piloted Aircraft Community

Chaitra M Hardison; Eyal Aharoni; Christopher Larson

RAND
2017
nidottu
This report examines stress and dissatisfaction in the U.S. Air Force's remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) community and ways to mitigate that stress and dissatisfaction. Focus groups revealed that RPA personnel were concerned by heavy workloads, undermanning, shiftwork, lack of training, and undesirable base locations. Researcher recommendations include reducing crews' workload and establishing a "combat-to-dwell" policy for RPA personnel.
Strength Testing in the Air Force

Strength Testing in the Air Force

Carra S. Sims; Chaitra M. Hardison; Maria C. Lytell; Abby Robyn; Eunice C. Wong

RAND
2014
pokkari
Since 1987, the Air Force has used the Strength Aptitude Test (SAT), a test of physical strength, to screen and classify enlisted personnel into career specialties. In this study, RAND evaluated the usefulness, validity, and fairness of the SAT, focusing on implementation of the SAT at military entrance processing stations and the process for setting strength requirements for career fields.
The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test

The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test

Chaitra M. Hardison; Carra S. Sims; Eunice C. Wong

RAND
2010
pokkari
The Air Force relies on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) as part of its officer selection process. Despite concerns about the test, the authors conclude that it is a good selection test that predicts important Air Force outcomes and is not biased against minorities or women. The Air Force would not benefit by replacing the AFOQT with the SAT, although other valid selection tools could be used to complement the AFOQT.
The Collegiate Learning Assessment

The Collegiate Learning Assessment

Chaitra M Hardison

RAND
2009
pokkari
The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) is a measure of how much students' critical thinking improves after attending college or university. This report illustrates how institutions can set their own standards on the CLA using a method that is appropriate for the CLA's unique characteristics.

RAND researchers developed a framework of 14 categories of cross-cultural behaviors and used it to design a survey of recently deployed airmen about the importance of such behaviors to their deployed performance and the helpfulness of training they had received. Analyses of the survey results are presented, along with recommendations for the design of a comprehensive training program and for next steps.
