Comme tous les tres qui provoquent les caresses, qui en donnent & en re oivent, comme les femmes, si le chat a t beaucoup aim par les uns, il ne lui a pas t pardonn par les autres, surtout par les m taphysiciens. Beaucoup avoueraient, avec le p re Bougeant, dans le livre peu amusant de l'Amusement philosophique sur le langage des b tes, que les b tes ne sont que des diables, & qu' la t te de ces diables marche le chat. Descartes fait de tout animal un automate. Pour combattre cette affirmation, il faudrait d ployer un grand attirail de m taphysique vers lequel je ne me sens pas port . Je pr f re d'autres natures d'esprits: Aristote, Pline, Plutarque, Montaigne, qui assoient leurs doutes sur des faits, prouv s par la raison & l'observation. Les naturalistes, ceux sur lesquels il est commode au bon sens de s'appuyer, tiennent pour l'intelligence chez les animaux, commencer par le p re de l'histoire naturelle. L'ensemble de la vie des animaux, dit Aristote, pr sente plusieurs actions qui sont des imitations de la vie humaine. Cette exactitude, qui est le fruit de la r flexion, est encore plus sensible chez les petits animaux que chez les grands. Nous voil loin des automates de Descartes. Avec Montaigne on n'a que l'embarras du choix. Les Essais sont le plus riche arsenal en faveur de l'intelligence des animaux. Presque chaque page, Montaigne se pla t rabattre le caquet de l'homme. C'est par vanit , dit-il, que l'homme se trie soy mesme & s pare de la presse des aultres cr atures, taille les parts aux animaulx ses confr res & compaignons, & leur distribue telle portion de facutz & de forces que bon luy semble. Les animaux confr res de l'homme, voil ce qu' crivait ce sceptique qui a fait passer tant de hardiesses sous le couvert de la bonhomie."
