Nuoren tytön kasvukertomus lumoaa lukijansa vuosisadasta toiseen.
Etonista valmistunut William Crimsworth matkustaa Brysseliin toimiakseen siellä opettajana, eli professorina, kuten Belgiassa sanotaan. Tyttökoulu tarjoaa periaatteelliselle nuorukaiselle haasteita ja houkutuksia. Aikansa kahleista pyristelevälle Williamille tärkeintä on kuitenkin kulkea omaa tietään kohti tosirakkautta muiden juonitteluista huolimatta.Charlotte Brontë yritti elinaikanaan turhaan löytää julkaisijaa epäsovinnaiselle ensimmäiselle romaanilleen. Professori julkaistiin Isossa-Britanniassa postuumisti vasta vuonna 1857.
"Shirley" is Charlotte Bronte's second novel and is set against the backdrop of the Luddite uprising against the Yorkshire textile industry in England during the industrial depression that followed the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. First published in 1849, the novel is the story of mill operator Robert Moore, whose business is troubled by the economic climate; his distant cousin Caroline Helstone, for whom Robert has affections; rich heiress and landowner Shirley Keeldar; and Robert's brother Louis, a poor tutor, whom Shirley has fallen in love with. "Shirley" is a classically romantic tale that deals with the timely themes of industrial unrest in Britain at the beginning of the 19th century and the role of women both at home and in business. The shy and timid Caroline and the independent and headstrong Shirley are both deeply affected by the decisions of the men in their lives and by changing social roles and expectations for women. They both must grapple with whether they are free to marry for love or if money will control yet another aspect of their lives. Bronte's popular novel is both an insightful social commentary and a mature and touching portrait of women trying to follow their romantic desires in an increasingly complicated world. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Bront . It was published in London, England, in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. with the title Jane Eyre. An Autobiography under the pen name "Currer Bell." The first American edition was released the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York. HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘Cheerfulness, it would appear, is a matter which depends fully as much on the state of things within as on the state of things without and around us.’ Considered one of her less well-known novels, Shirley is Charlotte Brontë’s only historical work, set during the Napoleonic Wars. Wealthy and independent, Shirley is very different from her friend Caroline, who has few prospects and is dependent on her uncle. Struggling mill owner Robert Moore considers marriage to the monied Shirley in order to secure his financial future; however, it is Caroline who he loves, while Shirley has fallen for Robert’s brother, an impoverished tutor who is deemed an unsuitable match for her. Unsentimental, yet unflinching in her honest portrayal of love, class conflict and identity, Brontë uses the backdrop of her beloved Yorkshire to play out the tensions and dramas of a society facing social and industrial upheaval.
