Shortlisted for the Deutscher Memorial Prize 2023This book presents an encompassing, detailed and thorough overview and reconstruction of Lefebvre's theory of space and of the urban. Henri Lefebvre belongs to the generation of the great French intellectuals and philosophers, together with his contemporaries Michel Foucault and Jean-Paul Sartre. His theory has experienced a remarkable revival over the last two decades, and is discussed and applied today in many disciplines in humanities and social sciences, particularly in urban studies, geography, urban sociology, urban anthropology, architecture and planning. Lefebvre, together with David Harvey, is one of the leading and most read theoreticians in these fields. This book explains in an accessible way the theoretical and epistemological context of this work in French philosophy and in the German dialectic (Hegel, Marx, and Nietzsche), and reconstructs in detail the historical development of its different elements. It also gives an overview on the receptions of Lefebvre and discusses a wide range of applications of this theory in many research fields, such as urban and regional development, urbanization, urbanity, social space, and everyday life.

Sie bilden eine Einheit - genau wie die verschiedenen Leben einer Seele. Mit seiner ersten Frau hat Christian Schmid mehrere Jahre in S dfrankreich gelebt. Er hat dort als bersetzer und Journalist gearbeitet. Zusammen haben sie ausgedehnte Reisen nach S damerika und Mexiko unternommen. Nach der R ckkehr in die Schweiz arbeitete Schmid als Buchh ndler und leitete w hrend 25 Jahren die esoterische Abteilung einer grossen Buchhandlung. Aufgrund eines Burn-Outs im Sommer 2007 liess er sich fr hpensionieren, um fortan seiner Berufung zu leben: dem Schreiben. Seit dieser Zeit arbeitet er als freier Autor. Im selben Jahr lernte er auch seine neue Lebenspartnerin kennen, mit welcher er elf Jahre zusammen war. Diese Verbindung intensivierte noch sein Interesse f r die Themen Wiedergeburt und Leben nach dem Tod. Mit ihr unternahm er Reisen nach Irland und Schottland, die ihrer beider fr here Leben ans Tageslicht brachten.

Das Buch befasst sich mit der alten Familie der Schmid von Uri, beginnend vor der Gr ndung der Eidgenossenschaft bis in die heutige Zeit. Spezielles Gewicht legte der Autor auf den Vorfahren Jost Dietrich Schmid, der im August 1550 von Kaiser Karl V. in den Ritterstand erhoben wurde. Was die Urahnen betrifft, so st tzt sich die Arbeit im Wesentlichen auf die Familiengeschichte von Landschreiber und Chronist Franz Vinzenz Schmid (1780). Als Chronist in der Tradition dieses Vorfahren versteht sich auch Christian Schmid. Mehrj hrige Recherchen f hrten ihn v.a. in den Kanton Uri, aber auch in die Kantone Thurgau, Schwyz, Luzern und St. Gallen. Interessantes ber diese Familie wurde so zutage gef rdert und vor dem Versinken in den Archiven bewahrt. Der chronologische Aufbau des Buches entspricht den Reisen und Recherchen des Autors. Der Band ist ausgestattet mit ber 100 Bildern.

An Urban Portrait was published in three languages by Birkhäuser Verlag in 2005 and has lost none of its relevance to this day.
