Pablo Picasso's artistic output is astonishing in its ambition and variety. This handsome publication examines a particular aspect of his legendary capacity for invention: his imaginative and original use of paper. He used it as a support for autonomous works, including etchings, prints and drawings, as well as for his papier-collé experiments of the 1910s and his revolutionary three-dimensional 'constructions', made of cardboard, paper and string. Sometimes, his use of paper was simply determined by circumstance: in occupied Paris, where art supplies were hard to come by, he ripped up paper tablecloths to make works of art. And, of course, his works on paper comprise the preparatory stages of some of his very greatest paintings, among them Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937). With reproductions of more than 300 works of art and additional texts by Violette Andres, Stephen Coppel, Emmanuelle Hincelin, Christopher Lloyd, Johan Popelard and Claustre Rafart Planas, this sumptuous study reveals the myriad ways in which Picasso's genius seized the potential of paper at different stages throughout his career.

The slippery and mutable boundaries between humans and nonhumans are frequently figured queerly in twenty-first-century U.S. literature. This innovative book examines the ways that nonhumans are brought into intimate, estranging contact with humans in contemporary novels, short stories, poems, and nonfiction. Through detailed attention to a selection of real and imagined flora, fauna, and other phenomena in the bestiary form—from horses to taxidermy to dogs and extinction—the book probes the ways in which the humans and the nonhumans are queerly entangled. Organized like a Medieval bestiary, this book contributes to a range of fields, including contemporary literary studies, American studies, posthuman and animal studies, queer studies, and more. Non/human relations are explored through close readings of fiction by writers, including Ocean Vuong, Justin Torres, Kristen Arnett, and Percival Everett; poetry by Danez Smith, Tommy Pico, Franny Choi, and Donika Kelly; and nonfiction by Mark Doty, Sabrina Imbler, and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, among others. In all, A Queer Bestiary argues that the human has never been solid, distinct, or singular; that various nonhumans open questions of queerness; and that recent literary representations of humans and nonhumans queer the boundaries between these two categories.

A compelling and authoritative overview of the drawings of Vincent van Gogh, one of the most celebrated and intriguing figures in the history of art. The Drawings of Vincent van Gogh is a comprehensive account celebrating the genius and singularity of the artist’s achievements in this field. Arranged by theme – from drawings of humble harvesters to beautifully rendered depictions of landscape, pensive life studies to memorable sketches of the famous Yellow House in Arles and other places – Van Gogh’s works on paper are explored from a fresh perspective by art historian Christopher Lloyd, who records the artist’s successes, failures, experiments, trials and disappointments. Primarily self-taught, Van Gogh approached drawing instinctually, but soon recognized the importance of mastering the grammar of art – anatomy, modelling, foreshortening, perspective – as well as materials and techniques, in order to convey his emotional responses to a subject as vividly as possible. Using examples from the artist’s voluminous and highly charged family correspondence, sketchbooks, as well as comparative artworks by Rembrandt, Dürer and others, the resulting overview gives us a greater understanding of why drawing is so important within Van Gogh’s unique oeuvre and equals the intensity and reputation of his paintings.

Michael Andrews (1928–1995) is probably one of the least known but one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century and his aptitude for painting only masterpieces has been noted on more than one occasion Andrews friendship from early in his career with Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff led to his identification as an artist belonging to the ‘School of London’. However, his work also demanded close attention as he addressed fundamental issues that are imbued with a universal relevance. His early figurative paintings, dating from the 1950s and 1960s, were directly inspired by the political and social changes associated with post-imperial Britain. From the 1970s, Andrews pursued a wider range of themes arising from his growing interest in philosophy and psychology, as revealed in his two-great series of works, Lights I–VII (1970–74) and School I–IV (1977–8). Inspired by his home county of Norfolk, he was increasingly engaged with landscape painting, often on a large scale. His comparatively small output concluded with three depictions of the River Thames begun in 1992, just before he was diagnosed with cancer; as such, these works have the profundity of an allegory of life. An authoritative analysis of the drawings (including watercolours and pastels) of twenty leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists in one magnificent volume. Manet, Pissarro, Morisot, Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh and their colleagues made some of the most beautiful drawings in the history of art. This book sets drawings by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists in the context of late 19th-century France and explains why these particular works are as important as their paintings in the representation of modernity. A new approach to materials and a wholly inclusive attitude to exhibitions gave drawings a more elevated status in this period than ever before, which avant-garde artists welcomed in their preference for scenes from contemporary life. For the first time also, painting and drawing shared the same stylistic principles of spontaneity, freer handling and lack of finish. Pastels by Degas, watercolours by Cézanne, pen-and-ink drawings by Van Gogh and mixed media works by Toulouse-Lautrec have an autonomy of their own, which proved instrumental in the development of modern art. The distinguished art historian Christopher Lloyd examines the drawings of twenty of the leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, highlighting an aspect of French avant-garde art that remains relatively unexplored and was of immense importance for the art movements that followed.

"Monet, van Gogh and Cezanne feature in a pleasurable Royal Academy show that demonstrates why the Impressionists remain the world's favourite set of artists." — Independent Best known for their superlative oils on canvas, Degas, Cézanne, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and numerous other Impressionists and Post-Impressionists also regularly used paper as a support for works in watercolour, gouache, pencil, tempera and that most elusive of media, pastel. Their practice transformed the status of these works from preparatory studies, to be left in the studio and not shown in public, to works of art in their own right. With insightful texts by acknowledged experts in the field, this sumptuous book brings together some 70 masterworks on paper by leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists. Their bold innovations challenged traditional attitudes, radically transformed the future direction of art and ultimately paved the way for later movements such as Abstract Expressionism.

A compelling and authoritative overview of the drawings of Vincent van Gogh, one of the most celebrated and intriguing figures in the history of art. Vincent van Gogh believed that drawing was the ‘root of everything’. This was reflected in the remarkable number of more than a thousand graphic works produced by the artist during his short, dramatic life – many of them personal, often lonely explorations of the emerging modern world, anxieties that still speak to us today. The Drawings of Vincent van Gogh is a comprehensive account celebrating the genius and singularity of the artist’s achievements in this field.
