The Abortion Act 1967 may be the most contested law in UK history, sitting on a fault line between the shifting tectonic plates of a rapidly transforming society. While it has survived repeated calls for its reform, with its text barely altered for over five decades, women's experiences of accessing abortion services under it have evolved considerably. Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews, this book explores how the Abortion Act was given meaning by a diverse cast of actors including women seeking access to services, doctors and service providers, campaigners, judges, lawyers, and policy makers. By adopting an innovative biographical approach to the law, the book shows that the Abortion Act is a 'living law'. Using this historically grounded socio-legal approach, this enlightening book demonstrates how the Abortion Act both shaped and was shaped by a constantly changing society.

Clare Parker wurde 1932 in Budapest als Klara Hochhauser geboren. Die Diskriminierung der ungarischen Juden während des Horthy-Regimes und ihre massenhafte Deportation und Ermordung nach dem Einmarsch Deutschlands im März 1944 griffen abrupt in das Leben des Mädchens Klara ein. Gemeinsam mit ihrer Mutter Magda wurde sie zunächst nach Auschwitz und später in das Mauthausener Außenlager Lenzing deportiert. Während ihre Mutter in Lenzing ums Leben kam, erlebte ihr Vater schwer krank seine Befreiung in Bergen-Belsen. Nach Kriegsende lebte Klara Hochhauser zunächst gemeinsam mit ihrem Vater in Budapest. Während des ungarischen Volksaufstandes 1956 flohen beide nach London, wo der Vater kurz darauf an den Spätfolgen seiner Inhaftierung starb. Erst Jahrzehnte später, nach dem Aufbau einer neuen Existenz in London, erlangte Clare, wie sie sich nun nannte, Gewissheit über den Tod ihrer Mutter im Konzentrationslager. In der Folge begann sie erstmals, sich systematisch mit den traumatisierenden Erlebnissen auseinander zu setzen, gab Interviews für die Spielberg Shoah Foundation sowie für das Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project und hielt ihre Lebensgeschichte schriftlich fest. Clare Parker ist Mutter zweier erwachsener Kinder und lebt heute in London.
