On the occasion of the five-hundredth anniversary of Utopia by Thomas More (1516-2015), this work imposes order on the mass of utopian narratives while offering a morphology of the genre. Based on a study of specific processes involved in constructing fictional worlds, it offers a systematized account of four subgenres illustrated by this corpus.
This book attempts to identify the specific causes that led the reversion of utopia into antiutopia during the Age of Reason.
Post-Tridentine Christian theology put an end to Renaissance utopian conceptions and gave free rein to anti-utopias which, from Joseph Hall's Mundus alter et idem (1605) and Artus Thomas' L'Isle des Hermaphrodites (1605), represented nightmarish societies.
