John Morland er i gifteferdig alder. Som arving til den rike Morland-familien er det hans oppgave å bli strategisk godt gift, Familien er katolikker og lojale til tronen, men den katolske kirkes stilling er usikker, og førte noen år tilbake til at Morlandgodset ble angrepet og kapellet forsøkt brent ned.
