Entitled Our Television is Weird, this work of fiction first appeared in The Canadian Children's Annual (1983). Under the same title, as a book for children: First Edition: HMS Press (London, ON), 1996; a book on disk. Entitled "She's Been so Grumpy": Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. An excerpt "Drat " I said, peering out the window. I breathed on the glass and fogged it up. I wiped a circle, drawing a peep hole, and spied a soggy world. "The ground is wet, the air is cold, and I'm stuck inside," I complained. "Morris," called my mother. I heard her rattling dishes in the kitchen. "Clean up those pots and pans." "She's been so grumpy," I thought. "Ever since she brought Tommy, my new brother, home from the hospital, she's baggy-eyed, bad-tempered, and boring. Who needs a mother who never takes me to the zoo? Either she's nursing Tommy, cuddling him, or she's cooking or cleaning. Tonight she's cooking shepherd's pie. I hate shepherd's pie And I'm getting sick of my brother's endless crying. His mouth ought to be corked." Starting English Class with Finnegans Wake-I Don't Think So
Previously published as Getting English Class Started (Academic Exchange Extra Greeley, CO (University of Northern Colorado)], 2010, Final Issue). An excerpt In my school, McNaughton Education Centre (Quesnel, BC), I teach English, English Literature, Communications, and Creative Writing to secondary alternate high school students, many of whom abhor reading and writing. Often I have asked students, "Do you mean you have never read a book? Not ever?" A typical response: "I've never read a book. I hate reading." My starting off class with their reading Dickens' David Copperfield won't work. I don't think their reading Joyce's Finnegans Wake will work either. That said (I feel a little laugh coming on), I remind myself of a song that my daughters sang in kindergarten: It begins with "inch by inch, row by row, I'm gonna make this garden grow." One summer (1988), as my wife and I and our three girls (aged 5, 8, and 11; we have four daughters now, all adults, I think) headed south to Disneyland, in our deluxe Hyundai Pony, those girls, bouncing their legs, sang that song from the back seat, adding delightful harmonics to the underpowered drone of the 1600cc Mitsubishi motor. In a literary sense, each class, I apply the words of their catchy song by giving each student a haiku or senryu printed on a little, non-intimidating sheet of paper. I ask students to write any comment on the front or back of the sheet: "Any memory, any image, anything your imagination conjures up, anything, any criticism, any comment about what you like about the poem-anything. No comment can be wrong."... The author Dan Lukiv is a poet, novelist, columnist, short story and article writer, and independent education researcher (hermeneutic phenomenology). A Survey of Anglo-Saxon to 20th Century English Literature
Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2021. Previously published as English Literature 12: Anglo-Saxon and Medieval, Renaissance and 17th Century, 18th Century and Romantic, Victorian and 20th Century (McNaughton Education Centre, Quesnel, BC], 2010). Direction for Teachers This course offers English teachers a simple, methodical teaching process. The assignments and concepts can be teacher-delivered through the lecture-format. But a simpler teaching method also exits. Teachers could e-mail (see the next paragraph for directions) the course to students, encourage them to get started, and answer questions as they arise-answer them either personally/individually or through group-discussion. Teachers who wish to provide students with an e-copy of my English Literature course may receive it from me, in a docx file, through e-mail. Once received, teachers could e-mail the course to their students. I welcome students to open the file through their personal e-mail accounts and to save it; then they're free to complete assignments at their computers, tablets, or laptops, by typing their responses in the docx file. After that, they simply show their work to their teachers, or print the work out page by page, for their teachers to read. Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2021. Previously published as Racism-Socio-Emotional Discussion Groups (McNaughton Centre Quesnel, BC], 2011). Introduction This program, through class discussions, explores unhumanistic forces of racism at the students' experiential level, encouraging them to empathize with and show compassion to others. Resources for discussions: 1. Students' opinions and experiences; 2. Teacher's knowledge of problems racism causes; and 3. Videos that feature unlikely friendships in the animal world (as found on youtube video-streams). For each of 20 weeks, students view one of 20 youtube video-streams, and construct a web that they daily add information to, based on the discussion topic of the week. Truths implied by the video-streams: Racism is both illogical and unhumanistic. The author Dan Lukiv is a poet, novelist, columnist, short story and article writer, and independent education researcher (hermeneutic phenomenology). Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2021. Introduction "The disciple whom Jesus loved," John, the last person to write a scriptural account of Christ's life and preaching and miracles (about 98 CE), repeats little of what we find in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. One might ask, why did he write this titular work? John 20:31, provides an answer: "These words] have been written down so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God." This Bible book carries great weight in many other ways, too. Consider, for starters, lessons in love (John 21:15), loyalty (21:20b), kindness (2:10, 11), and courage (2:15). Consider, too, as a work "inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16), John helps us "discern thoughts and intentions" (Hebrews 3:14)-even the sense, the state of our hearts. An excerpt, based on chapter 16 of John "Did a stork bring meTo be your little boy?" Bobby askedAs his mother sprinkled diced Tomatoes on his taco(That had a crunchy shell, The way he especially liked it ). "A stork?" his father said, his wifeLooking over at him, smirking."Yes," Bobby said, joyfully munching On his Mexican wonder."A girl at kindergarten told me todayThat a stork brought her home To her mummy and daddy."His mother had not stopped smirking."Well, Papa?" she said. "What do You have to say about that?"Everybody stopped eating toListen to what Papa had to say.
