This is the fifteenth annual collection of short works by students of Berkshire Middle School. The focus remains the same as in previous volumes: With genuine effort and attention to the writing process, young authors can produce works suitable for a wide audience. Over a twelve-week period, each sixth-grade writer turned a basic premise into a fully-formed story. The changes along the way sometimes surprised even the authors themselves. The stories in Life in L.A. span multiple categories, including fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, realistic fiction, mystery, and nonfiction. And to those readers judging this book by its cover, keep in mind that elements of the jacket design are the result of author suggestions. In all respects, this book is the product of the writers whose names appear inside.

Appeals are a crucial part of Europe’s asylum system but they remain poorly understood. Building on insights and perspectives from legal geography and socio-legal studies, this book shines a light on what takes place during asylum appeals and puts forward suggestions for improving their fairness and accessibility. Drawing on hundreds of ethnographic observations of appeal hearings, as well as research interviews, the authors paint a detailed picture of the limitations of refugee protection available through asylum appeals. Refugee law can appear dependable and reliable in policy documents and legal texts. However, this work reveals that, in reality, myriad social, political, psychological, linguistic, contextual and economic factors interfere with and frequently confound the protection that refugee law promises during its concrete enactment. Drawing on evidence from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom, the book equips readers with a clear sense of the fragility of legal protection for people forced to migrate to Europe. The book will appeal to scholars of migration studies, legal studies, legal geography and the social sciences generally, as well as practitioners in asylum law throughout Europe and beyond. Hi, I'm Daniel, I am 53 years old, and in that time I've done a lot of different things. I worked in a Stone quarry for a few years, drove a semi for a few more, worked in retail a bit, and owned a gun shop. Somewhere along the line, I got an associates degree in wildlife management from Hocking College in southern Ohio. I've been fortunate enough to live in four different states and visit Hudson Bay and Saskatchewan during the fall migration. But, amid all that, there have been three constants in my life. I've been writing since I could hold a pencil. I've been hunting since I could hold a BB gun, and there have always been dogs. That old fellow laying on my lap in the picture is Bill, and he's the one who got me started on Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. He's been with me for 11 years no, and he's the partriarch of the dog pack that lives at my house, and like all Chessies, he's the epitome of loyalty, mischief, and heart.

Beginning in the early 1980s Aboriginal Australians found in music, radio, and filmic media a means to make themselves heard across the country and to insert themselves into the center of Australian political life. In The Voice and Its Doubles Daniel Fisher analyzes the great success of this endeavor, asking what is at stake in the sounds of such media for Aboriginal Australians. Drawing on long-term ethnographic research in northern Australia, Fisher describes the close proximity of musical media, shifting forms of governmental intervention, and those public expressions of intimacy and kinship that suffuse Aboriginal Australian social life. Today’s Aboriginal media include genres of country music and hip-hop; radio requests and broadcast speech; visual graphs of a digital audio timeline; as well as the statistical media of audience research and the discursive and numerical figures of state audits and cultural policy formation. In each of these diverse instances the mediatized voice has become a site for overlapping and at times discordant forms of political, expressive, and institutional creativity.

The book is composed of all new stories by new authors, but the purpose of this showcase is the same as its predecessors, Short Stories by Short People andWho Says Adults Have to Write All the Good Stories? The pieces in it exemplify how young authors can apply the writing process to create works suitable for a wide audience. The collection is the result of a twelve-week process that allowed each student to take a basic idea of his or her choosing and develop it in ways that even the author may not have anticipated. From such rough material came this multi-faceted gem, in which the genres of humor, mystery, adventure, science fiction, historical fiction, horror, fantasy, and even nonfiction are represented.
