Slide, spin, pop, and puzzle your way through a gallery of illusions. In his inventive new pop-up book, artist and paper engineer David Carter transforms optical tricks into dazzling three-dimensional experiences. Open a spread and watch patterns pulse, lines twist against logic, and arrows point in impossible directions. Pull, lift, and peek as the pop-ups spring to life, each one daring you to trust what you see—then proving you wrong. Carter’s clever constructions burst with bold color and surprising movement, inviting readers to laugh and marvel at how easily the eye can be deceived. Children will delight in the shifting images, while adults will rediscover classic illusions reimagined in ingenious forms. Part puzzle, part design object, and full of play, this book invites endless exploration. Its inventive paper engineering makes each spread a sculptural surprise, a miniature gallery of visual trickery rendered in three dimensions.

Navigating the complexities of school life can be a daunting task for young people, educators, and parents alike. This book aims to provide practical guidance and insights to those who find themselves struggling in the educational landscape. While grounded in academic theory and evidence-based research, the primary focus of this book is on offering tangible solutions and real-world examples. Through a series of stories, vignettes, and problem-solving scenarios, the authors explore the challenges faced by students, teachers, and parents from various perspectives. By delving into these narratives, readers are likely to find answers to the questions that prompted them to pick up this book in the first place. The authors propose a model for change called the Multidomain Model of Education and Living (MDM), which aims to facilitate and enhance collaborative relationships between home and school, as well as within these two domains. Rather than advocating for sweeping, top-down changes that are often met with resistance, the MDM offers a flexible framework that can be adapted in part or in its entirety to suit the unique needs of each school community. The authors draw upon their own experiences in the Irish education system to illustrate how these ideas can be further developed and implemented. By inviting parents, guardians, pupils, and school staff to consider incorporating elements of the MDM into their own schools, the book serves as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue and incremental change. Ultimately, the authors believe that lasting transformation in Irish education will not come from above or below, but rather from the middle, where people come together to engage in open and constructive conversations. This book is a vital contribution to that ongoing dialogue.

Some of the greatest mysteries of the universe are questions that remain unanswered. Where did life on Earth come from? Since Earth exists in space, can life exist elsewhere in our galaxy? And if life does exist throughout the universe, where are all the aliens?Welcome to Fermi's paradox, defined as the clear lack of evidence for alien life in our universe despite the seemingly endless opportunities for it to emerge and flourish. It is a mystery that continues to spark the imaginations of people worldwide.Nowadays we are alone in the midst of the Great Silence that surrounds us. But what are the conditions for alien life forms to evolve on a planet and subsequently contact us?And how can we justify our loneliness, based on the idea that there are other living beings? This book discusses and examines the possible solutions to this paradox and also how they reflect on us, our past and our future.

It was a warm summer evening, about 6:00pm, on July 9, 1986 when my police search warrant team rolled down a Pickering driveway in a dusty procession of two unmarked police cars and one marked police car. The team consisted of myself, several Detectives from the Durham Regional Police Service, a Children's Aid Society worker from Durham Region and a uniformed officer from one of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force's downtown divisions. The air was heavy and smelled of dry hay. Heat bugs welcomed our arrival with a chorus of chirps and buzzes. It had been one month to the day that I became immersed in the world of religious cults and it was an investigation that would stay with me forever. We were preparing to enter a century old stone house that we had come to know as the scene of horrendous child abuse and torture under the guise of a religious cult. " Upon our arrival we found a young boy out front tending to a garden. We asked if his name was Nathaniel? without a word, he dropped the hoe he was using and got into the back seat of the car. His life of neglect, abuse and torture had come to an end. The names of the suspects and the victims have been changed but the identities of the investigators are real.

This book is a collection of folk tales from both North and South Korea. They have been selected by the authors, with contemporary English speakers in mind, from thousands of such tales. The authors have retold and translated the tales so that they read well and also retain a quintessentially Korean aesthetic quality. In this book readers will find themselves in an exotic world of ancient Oriental charms and wonders. They will encounter traditional Korean dragons, heavenly maidens, dokkaebis (goblins), bluebirds and many eccentric characters such as naughty children, greedy men and strange old people. Many of the tales involve Shamanistic, Buddhist and Taoist cosmology, transporting readers into a surrealistic fantasy world. As in folk tales from other cultures, a considerable number of protagonists in this book face distressing situations and eventually overcome them. These sequences are usually depicted through humour, jest and wit, which will have readers smile in recognition. Korean folk tales have not been widely translated into English. This book will provide an opportunity for readers to develop a good insight into the unique properties of Korean folk tales.

"A brave and honest account that would be a wonderful resource not only for couples that are considering adopting children, but also their friends and family members to help them to understand their emotional roller coaster." - Adrian Jones" A refreshing and honest account of the up's and down's of adoption. Very thought provoking. It is unusual to read a book where the husband and wife separately retell their story of why and how they came to the the courageous decision to adopt. I have read various adoption books about the process so found it very refreshing to hear it from a different perspective. I particularly enjoyed hearing the Nan's viewpoint " - LisaThis book is a must-read for anyone considering adoption, and their friends and family. It's the real life story of Jane and David adopting two related children. It takes you on their journey from trying IVF, to the agony of infertility and endometriosis. It takes you through their whole adoption journey in detail, which is helpful for those who'd like an insight into what it's actually like preparing to adopt children. It's an heartfelt account, describing the whirlwind of emotions and the toll it took on them as parents. It gives you the truth about what social workers expect of you, what can go wrong when trying to adopt, and how to parent an adopted child.Overall it's a story of positivity, inspiration, and the joy adoption can bring. Written from the separate viewpoints of a Mum, Dad, Grandmother, and also the children-it will give you a rare insight into the experiences of the whole family...which is useful to show to those people, so they can understand what you will be going through. Most adoption books are written from only the women's point of view, so it is really useful to show David's chapters to Men trying to adopt.Authentic and easy to read, their journey shows what it's really like preparing to be approved by the Adoption Panel, being 'matched' with a child, 'Introductions', and getting the Adoption Order to legally adopt your child in the UK.The book also includes case studies of other families who adopted. Some adopted due to infertility...others were single women with a strong urge to have children.Adopting a baby or child for life is not a quick or easy endeavour-but it can be enormously rewarding. This adoption book helps you realise that you are not alone.ExtractWe had a few days to prepare-we had to buy a cot, tell the family, squeal and dance around the lounge. We started visiting the foster carers house and taking Summer out to the park. Then they brought her over to our house for a visit, and eventually, she stayed overnight. After two weeks we were all exhausted from the travel and emotion. We also hadn't been told that her routine was getting up at 4 a.m. every day.She didn't sleep very well, and of course, it was very stressful on her as this was her second big move, and the first she could remember. Her foster family were her family, so she was confused and upset. The foster family had looked after her for ten months and really struggled to let go emotionally. Had they been younger, they would have no doubt adopted Summer themselves. We were still involved with the social workers-she would visit every few days to check we were doing okay. It was no doubt to help us, and they did give us some good advice, but it felt like an intrusion and an added pressure to demonstrate we were "coping". We got the hang of the logistics, but Summer cried a lot and continued sleeping poorly. We started going to toddler groups and everyone assumed I'd given birth. Summer attached to me really quickly but rejected David. He chatted to one of the other adopting Dads, who suggested David could...
