A Revolution Is Coming. It Isn't What You Think. This book tells the improbable stories of Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, a small startup in Needham, Massachusetts, with aspirations to be a beacon to engineering education everywhere, and the iFoundry incubator at the University of Illinois, an unfunded pilot program with aspirations to change engineering at a large public university that wasn't particularly interested in changing. That either one survived is story enough, but what they found out together changes the course of education transformation forever: - How joy, trust, openness, and connec- tion are the keys to unleashing young, courageous engineers.- How engineers educated in narrow technical terms with a fixed mindset need an education that actively engages six minds-analytical, design, people, linguistic, body, and mindful- using a growth mindset.- How emotion and culture are the crucial elements of change, not content, curriculum, and pedagogy.- How four technologies of trust are well established and widely available to promote more rapid academic change.- How all stakeholders can join together in a movement of open innovation to accelerate collaborative disruption of the status quo.Read this book and get a glimpse inside the coming revolution in engineering. Feel the engaging stories in this book and understand the depth of change that is coming. Use this book to help select, shape, demand, and create educational experiences aligned with the creative imperative of the twenty-first century.

Beginning in the 1880s, the economic realities and class dynamics of popular northern resort towns unsettled prevailing assumptions about political economy and threatened segregationist practices. Exploiting early class divisions, black working-class activists staged a series of successful protests that helped make northern leisure spaces a critical battleground in a larger debate about racial equality. While some scholars emphasize the triumph of black consumer activism with defeating segregation, Goldberg argues that the various consumer ideologies that first surfaced in northern leisure spaces during the Reconstruction era contained desegregation efforts and prolonged Jim Crow. Combining intellectual, social, and cultural history, The Retreats of Reconstruction examines how these decisions helped popularize the doctrine of "separate but equal" and explains why the politics of consumption is critical to understanding the "long civil rights movement."

"Informative, provocative, and practical...developing the skills outlined in The Entrepreneurial Engineer is a necessity for a productive engineering career." —Raymond L. Price, William H. Severns Professor of Human Behavior Director, Illinois Leadership(r) Center, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign "I believe that The Entrepreneurial Engineer has the potential to change the landscape of what engineers learn and do." —John R. Koza, former CEO and chairman, Scientific Games Inc. and Consulting Professor, Stanford University "Dr. Goldberg provides the road map for engineers of the future to stay at the front of the wave by learning to think more like entrepreneurs. . . Consider this book your survival handbook for the rest of your life." —From the Foreword by Tim Schigel, Director Blue Chip Venture Company Entrepreneurial times call for The Entrepreneurial Engineer In an age when technology and business are merging as never before, today's engineers need skills matched with the times. Today, career success as an engineer is determined as much by an ability to communicate with coworkers, sell ideas, and manage time as by talent at manipulating a Laplace transform, coding a Java(r) object, or analyzing a statically indeterminate structure. This book covers those nontechnical skills needed by today's entrepreneurial engineers who mix strong technical know-how, business and organizational prowess, and an alert eye for opportunity. Author David Goldberg unlocks the keys to ten core competencies at the heart of what entrepreneurial engineers need to master to be effective in a fast-moving world of deals, teams, startups, and innovating corporations. The book provides step-by-step explanations of how to solve many kinds of word problems typically encountered in high school chemistry courses. "How to Solve Word Problems in Chemistry" offers detailed, easy-to-follow instruction in procedures for solving word problems, with an emphasis on the mechanics and grammar of problem-solving. The book can be used independently or in conjunction with any of the standard chemistry texts on either the high school, community college, or freshman university level. A high school chemistry course contains a vast amount of material to be covered by the classroom teacher, including many difficult concepts, laboratory experiments, and the solving of word problems. The classroom teacher does not have the time to go through all of the basic steps in solving word problems, with enough repetition for the average student.Often, after seeing just a few solved examples in class, the student is sent home with homework problems that cause them to have great anxiety and frustration. The reason for the angst is that some of the homework problems that cause them to have great anxiety and frustration. The reason for the angst is that some of the homework problems they encounter are variations, and not like the example problems solved in class. This book addresses all the variations of word problems that students are likely to encounter in their chemistry course.
