Historical fiction centered around the life and tragic death of the German Romantic poet and philosopher Karoline von Günderrode. In 1806, when she was only twenty-six, Karoline von Günderrode plunged a dagger through her heart. She was a gifted poet and philosopher, a member of the circle of Romantic writers such as Bettine Brentano, Clemens Brentano, and Achim von Arnim. Women were not admitted to universities at the time (1780–1806) and so Karoline educated herself with the help of mentors and a library of books. She was devoted to the greatest writers, philosophers, and thinkers of her time and of all times, among them Goethe, Kant, Schelling, Novalis, Hölderlin, Plato, Heraclitus, and Empedocles. Yet neither her learning nor her intense love of nature were able to sustain her life. Karoline fell in love with a Heidelberg professor of classics who was married and unable or unwilling to leave his wife. There were of course other factors that led to her suicide—and the novel details them in its eighty-six episodes narrated by twenty-six different characters. Each character tells her or his or its own version of the story, and the reader is left to piece it all together—which is what one must do when confronting any case of suicide. We are called upon to understand the catastrophe but also to realize that our understanding will never satisfy us. Tragedy is not about understanding. When the old men of Thebes see Antigone marching to her tomb, they can only cry, "Child! Child!"

Lectures on ecstatic temporality and on Heidegger's political legacy.In Ecstasy, Catastrophe, David Farrell Krell provides insight into two areas of Heidegger's thought: his analysis of ecstatic temporality in Being and Time (1927) and his "political" remarks in the recently published Black Notebooks (1931–1941). The first part of Krell's book focuses on Heidegger's interpretation of time, which Krell takes to be one of Heidegger's greatest philosophical achievements. In addition to providing detailed commentary on ecstatic temporality, Krell considers Derrida's analysis of ekstasis in his first seminar on Heidegger, taught in Paris in 1964–1965. Krell also relates ecstatic temporality to the work of other philosophers, including Aristotle, Augustine, Kant, Schelling, Hölderlin, and Merleau-Ponty; he then analyzes Dasein as infant and child, relating ecstatic temporality to the "mirror stage" theory of Jacques Lacan.The second part of the book turns to Heidegger's Black Notebooks, which have received a great deal of critical attention in the press and in philosophical circles. Notorious for their pejorative references to Jews and Jewish culture, the Notebooks exhibit a level of polemic throughout that Krell takes to be catastrophic in and for Heidegger's thought. Heidegger's legacy therefore seems to be split between the best and the worst of thinking-somewhere between ecstasy and catastrophe.Based on the 2014 Brauer Lectures in German Studies at Brown University, the book communicates the fruits of Krell's many years of work on Heidegger in an engaging and accessible style.

Features a reconstruction of an unfinished text by Jacques Derrida from his most penetrating series of readings of Heidegger's philosophy.During the 1980s Jacques Derrida wrote and published three incisive essays under the title Geschlecht, a German word for "generation" and "sexuality." These essays focused on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, taking up the rarely discussed issue of sexual difference in Heidegger's thought. A fourth essay-actually the third in the series-was never completed and never published. In Phantoms of the Other, David Farrell Krell reconstructs this third Geschlecht on the basis of archival materials and puts it in the context of the entire series. Funeral rites no longer function as a way to mediate death or to maintain a link between the living and dead. Today the disappearance of certain funerary practices attests to the denial of death as such. They reflect a preference for focusing on remembering the life of the deceased in order to neutralize death, thus displacing the value of mourning, now viewed as something to be done as quickly as possible. Moreover, science, like religion before it and like the contemporary "cult of the body," has fed our fantasies about immortality, promising us longer lives of better quality, and even the possibility of conquering death altogether. Despite all these attempts to overcome or neutralize death, humanity has been unable to eliminate its anxiety about death and nothingness. True to her roots in phenomenology, Dastur not only examines these contemporary tendencies with a critical eye but also argues that we must once again learn to assume death, to become mortal, to learn how to die. Death is not the last moment of human life, but rather its essential attribute. Dastur's skill as a "translator" of phenomenology into accessible and clear prose is nowhere more apparent than in her "little book on death"—indeed, the intended audience is less those who specialize in phenomenology or academic philosophy than a nonspecialist public hungry for philosophical reflection on what is closest to us. And nothing is closer to us than the ever-present possibility of our own imminent death.
