Engineers are expected to design structures and machines that can operate in challenging and volatile environments, while allowing for variation in materials and noise in measurements and signals. Statistics in Engineering, Second Edition: With Examples in MATLAB and R covers the fundamentals of probability and statistics and explains how to use these basic techniques to estimate and model random variation in the context of engineering analysis and design in all types of environments. The first eight chapters cover probability and probability distributions, graphical displays of data and descriptive statistics, combinations of random variables and propagation of error, statistical inference, bivariate distributions and correlation, linear regression on a single predictor variable, and the measurement error model. This leads to chapters including multiple regression; comparisons of several means and split-plot designs together with analysis of variance; probability models; and sampling strategies. Distinctive features include: All examples based on work in industry, consulting to industry, and research for industry Examples and case studies include all engineering disciplines Emphasis on probabilistic modeling including decision trees, Markov chains and processes, and structure functions Intuitive explanations are followed by succinct mathematical justifications Emphasis on random number generation that is used for stochastic simulations of engineering systems, demonstration of key concepts, and implementation of bootstrap methods for inference Use of MATLAB and the open source software R, both of which have an extensive range of statistical functions for standard analyses and also enable programing of specific applications Use of multiple regression for times series models and analysis of factorial and central composite designs Inclusion of topics such as Weibull analysis of failure times and split-plot designs that are commonly used in industry but are not usually included in introductory textbooks Experiments designed to show fundamental concepts that have been tested with large classes working in small groups Website with additional materials that is regularly updated Andrew Metcalfe, David Green, Andrew Smith, and Jonathan Tuke have taught probability and statistics to students of engineering at the University of Adelaide for many years and have substantial industry experience. Their current research includes applications to water resources engineering, mining, and telecommunications. Mahayaudin Mansor worked in banking and insurance before teaching statistics and business mathematics at the Universiti Tun Abdul Razak Malaysia and is currently a researcher specializing in data analytics and quantitative research in the Health Economics and Social Policy Research Group at the Australian Centre for Precision Health, University of South Australia. Tony Greenfield, formerly Head of Process Computing and Statistics at the British Iron and Steel Research Association, is a statistical consultant. He has been awarded the Chambers Medal for outstanding services to the Royal Statistical Society; the George Box Medal by the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics for Outstanding Contributions to Industrial Statistics; and the William G. We all want to live a life that matters--a life of meaning and significance. The problem is, when we think of a life that makes a difference, we think way too small. Our lives can and should make an impact today--and we should also be working toward building a legacy that lasts for generations to come.Rejecting the current work-hard-then-retire mindset, David Green, founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby, and Bill High call us to a biblical view of ourselves and our families--a generational mindset. With a paradigm-changing perspective, this book helps you · develop a legacy perspective on your life and family· articulate and live out your mission and values· recover from failures and celebrate successes· tell your stories from generation to generationIt may feel strange at first, but when you shift your mindset to understand your life in generational terms, you'll discover that while you are not the story, you are part of a story that matters for eternity.
Do you want to live a life that matters more? More than your career, more than the kids you raised, more than the individual acts of kindness and charity you may have performed? How about a life that matters for eternity? Though that may sound like a lofty goal reserved for only the most saintly of people, it is possible for anyone to achieve.Through 90 powerful readings, The Legacy Life Devotional challenges and equips you to live a countercultural, biblical life that matters for generations to come. Building off the concepts in The Legacy Life, founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby David Green shares daily devotional thoughts about how to · develop a legacy perspective on your life and family· articulate and live out your mission and values· recover from failures and celebrate successes· tell your stories from generation to generationIt may feel strange at first, but when you shift your mindset to understand your life in generational terms, you'll discover that while you are not the story, you are part of a story that matters for eternity.
If we desire to honor God in all we do, we need to be in his Book every day. Through the Bible, God offers us so much more wisdom for living and leading--and for every domain of life--than anything this world can ever give us. That's why Hobby Lobby founder and CEO David Green wrote The Leader's Devotional. By sharing the biblical principles that are the foundation of his life and leadership, he challenges and encourages each of us to seek God's guidance for our lives, for our families, and for our organizations. With Scripture, reflection questions, and a short prayer, each devotional hits on a topic that is close to the heart. Do you want to live and work according to God's plans, hear what he's saying to you, and put it into practice? Then this is the devotional for you.

This fully updated second edition uses the career of Edward the Black Prince to explore key developments in the history of late medieval Europe. The eruption of the Hundred Years War, the arrival of the Black Death, England’s first religious heresy, and major innovations in the role of parliament all took place during Edward’s lifetime. As king-in-waiting and one of the most significant noblemen in the realm, the prince was a major influence over local and international politics, and his example helped reshape concepts of lordship throughout the Plantagenet estates. This thoroughly revised edition includes new sources and builds on the wealth of scholarship which has been published in recent years about the fourteenth century. It includes considerations of the prince’s military career in France and Iberia, his household and the ‘colonial’ characteristics of his administrations in Wales and Aquitaine. The prince’s career also reveals the influence of the chivalric ethic and the importance of Gascony to the English crown, while his relationship with Joan, ‘the Fair Maid’ of Kent is suggestive of the changing character of female agency in the later middle ages. Drawing on central themes such as plague, chivalry, lordship, parliament, gender, and religion, Edward the Black Prince is essential reading for all students and scholars concerned with society, culture, and power in medieval Europe.

"In Porto L a Green demonstrates his extensive knowledge of, and deep appreciation for, the traditional culture and history of Galicia. He has spent countless hours in the mountains and villages of the region learning its customs and stories to offer a book that returns to a former time through an imaginative journey of discovery." -Fernando Alonso Romero, Author of O Cami o de Fisterra"Porto L a is a contemporary classic creating a magical world reminiscent of Garc a M rquez's Macondo. This is the work of a master storyteller at the height of his power. Sensitivity to sound and form in every phrase of this book as well as its vivid descriptions of the Spanish countryside give it a poetic quality rare in novels of this length. Porto L a is a work that must be read slowly to achieve the full effect of the power of its language." -Sassan Tabatabai, Author of UzunburunPorto L a is a coming-of-age story set on the Spanish Coast of Death in the Celtic region of Galicia during the latter half of the twentieth century when the beliefs of an ancient past had not yet disappeared from country life, and people were still "living in a time before the disenchantment of the world, still engaging the mysteries of nature, of life and death, creatively without the explanations of modern science." Like Carlo Levi's Gagliano and Cinema Paradiso's Giancaldo, Porto L a is a world of its own, an ageless land of the imagination, existing in the narrator's vivid memories of a rural past as he looks back from the perspective of modern urban life to a time of wonder and enchantment.
