How Mechanics Shaped the Modern World

How Mechanics Shaped the Modern World

David H. Allen

Springer International Publishing AG

This updated and augmented second edition covers the history of mechanics in such a way as to explain how this all-important discipline shaped our world. Like the first edition, Dr. Allen presents the material in an engaging, accessible manner, with many historic insights and thorough explanations of attending concepts. The text retains its coverage of classical mechanics, essentially Newtonian mechanics, and adds chapters on three additional topics that go well beyond classical mechanics: relativity, quantum/nanomechanics, and biomechanics.

Modeling and Design of Flexible Pavements and Materials

Modeling and Design of Flexible Pavements and Materials

This textbook lays out the state of the art for modeling of asphalt concrete as the major structural component of flexible pavements. The text adopts a pedagogy in which a scientific approach, based on materials science and continuum mechanics, predicts the performance of any configuration of flexible roadways subjected to cyclic loadings. The authors incorporate state-of the-art computational mechanics to predict the evolution of material properties, stresses and strains, and roadway deterioration. Designed specifically for both students and practitioners, the book presents fundamentally complex concepts in a clear and concise way that aids the roadway design community to assimilate the tools for designing sustainable roadways using both traditional and innovative technologies.

Covering the history of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1790--when it was called the U.S. Revenue Marine--through World War I, this book describes the service's national defense missions, including actions during the War of 1812, clashes with pirates, slave ships and Seminole Indians, the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. During World War I the USCG supported U.S. Navy operations across the Atlantic, escorted merchant convoys and engaged in anti-submarine warfare. Original maps are included.

Introduction to the Mechanics of Deformable Solids

Introduction to the Mechanics of Deformable Solids

David H. Allen

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Introduction to the Mechanics of Deformable Solids: Bars and Beams introduces the theory of beams and bars, including axial, torsion, and bending loading and analysis of bars that are subjected to combined loadings, including resulting complex stress states using Mohr’s circle. The book provides failure analysis based on maximum stress criteria and introduces design using models developed in the text. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes fundamentals, including consistent mathematical notation. The author also presents the fundamentals of the mechanics of solids in such a way that the beginning student is able to progress directly to a follow-up course that utilizes two- and three-dimensional finite element codes imbedded within modern software packages for structural design purposes. As such, excessive details included in the previous generation of textbooks on the subject are obviated due to their obsolescence with the availability of today’s finite element software packages.

Introduction to Aerospace Structural Analysis

Introduction to Aerospace Structural Analysis

This text provides students who have had statics and introductory strength of materials with the necessary tools to perform stress analysis on aerospace structures such as wings, tails, fuselages, and space frames. It progresses from introductory continuum mechanics through strength of materials of thin-walled structures to energy methods, culminating in an introductory chapter on the powerful finite element method.
