"I was fortunate indeed to have worked with a fantastic team on the design and implementation of the concurrency features added to the Java platform in Java 5.0 and Java 6. Now this same team provides the best explanation yet of these new features, and of concurrency in general. Concurrency is no longer a subject for advanced users only. Every Java developer should read this book."--Martin BuchholzJDK Concurrency Czar, Sun Microsystems "For the past 30 years, computer performance has been driven by Moore's Law; from now on, it will be driven by Amdahl's Law. Writing code that effectively exploits multiple processors can be very challenging. Java Concurrency in Practice provides you with the concepts and techniques needed to write safe and scalable Java programs for today's--and tomorrow's--systems."--Doron RajwanResearch Scientist, Intel Corp "This is the book you need if you're writing--or designing, or debugging, or maintaining, or contemplating--multithreaded Java programs. If you've ever had to synchronize a method and you weren't sure why, you owe it to yourself and your users to read this book, cover to cover."--Ted NewardAuthor of Effective Enterprise Java "Brian addresses the fundamental issues and complexities of concurrency with uncommon clarity. This book is a must-read for anyone who uses threads and cares about performance."--Kirk PepperdineCTO, JavaPerformanceTuning.com "This book covers a very deep and subtle topic in a very clear and concise way, making it the perfect Java Concurrency reference manual. Each page is filled with the problems (and solutions!) that programmers struggle with every day. Effectively exploiting concurrency is becoming more and more important now that Moore's Law is delivering more cores but not faster cores, and this book will show you how to do it."--Dr. Cliff ClickSenior Software Engineer, Azul Systems "I have a strong interest in concurrency, and have probably written more thread deadlocks and made more synchronization mistakes than most programmers. Brian's book is the most readable on the topic of threading and concurrency in Java, and deals with this difficult subject with a wonderful hands-on approach. This is a book I am recommending to all my readers of The Java Specialists' Newsletter, because it is interesting, useful, and relevant to the problems facing Java developers today."--Dr. Heinz KabutzThe Java Specialists' Newsletter "I've focused a career on simplifying simple problems, but this book ambitiously and effectively works to simplify a complex but critical subject: concurrency. Java Concurrency in Practice is revolutionary in its approach, smooth and easy in style, and timely in its delivery--it's destined to be a very important book."--Bruce TateAuthor of Beyond Java "Java Concurrency in Practice is an invaluable compilation of threading know-how for Java developers. I found reading this book intellectually exciting, in part because it is an excellent introduction to Java's concurrency API, but mostly because it captures in a thorough and accessible way expert knowledge on threading not easily found elsewhere."--Bill VennersAuthor of Inside the Java Virtual Machine Threads are a fundamental part of the Java platform. As multicore processors become the norm, using concurrency effectively becomes essential for building high-performance applications. Java SE 5 and 6 are a huge step forward for the development of concurrent applications, with improvements to the Java Virtual Machine to support high-performance, highly scalable concurrent classes and a rich set of new concurrency building blocks. In Java Concurrency in Practice, the creators of these new facilities explain not only how they work and how to use them, but also the motivation and design patterns behind them. However, developing, testing, and debugging multithreaded programs can still be very difficult; it is all too easy to create concurrent programs that appear to work, but fail when it matters most: in production, under heavy load. Java Concurrency in Practice arms readers with both the theoretical underpinnings and concrete techniques for building reliable, scalable, maintainable concurrent applications. Rather than simply offering an inventory of concurrency APIs and mechanisms, it provides design rules, patterns, and mental models that make it easier to build concurrent programs that are both correct and performant. This book covers: Basic concepts of concurrency and thread safety Techniques for building and composing thread-safe classes Using the concurrency building blocks in java.util.concurrent Performance optimization dos and don'ts Testing concurrent programs Advanced topics such as atomic variables, nonblocking algorithms, and the Java Memory Model

Dayyev was a source of wonderment to his family, whilst they all excelled in various careers, he was however unique, an artist, someone who drew images with carbon sticks. Artists... real artists that is, were rare in the Empire, it was just too easy to get the AIs to do it for you. Yet Dayyev had talent, the ability to draw and bring out the 'essence' of a subject, something no AI could. It also meant the Empire could use a young man no one in their right mind would suspect was someone other than he seemed, not with his talent for art.

Magic is all around you. Most of you don't see it and will never see it, not without some very expensive and large scientific apparatus. It doesn't mean it doesn't exist of course, just that most people aren't equipped for it. We call it magic. I guess a scientist would call it something else.

Darras was a veteran of a brutal five year war against a despicable yet powerful enemy. Ordered to hold for three days as the last of his defeated nation's people were loaded onto colonisation ships, he'd done the impossible and held for ten, leaving the invaders with nothing but an empty port and massive casualties. Their revenge was terrible, those few that survived the final onslaught were impaled before him even as he was tortured to try and reveal where his nation had fled. Finally, he died in agony, alone and mocked... and then discovered that death was not to be his, with a new life and a new challenge with the blessings of a goddess who needed his help.

THE INSPIRATIONAL MEMOIR FROM HARRY POTTER STUNTMAN DAVID HOLMES, WITH A FOREWORD BY DANIEL RADCLIFFE: PERFECT FOR HARRY POTTER FANS As stunt double to Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter film franchise, stuntman David Holmes helped to move J.K. Rowling's era-defining story from the page to the big screen. His work as a real-life Fall Guy enabled him to create some of the most memorable action sequences in the Wizarding World, as he became the first person ever to play Quidditch. In living his own hero's journey, David was also one of only a handful of people to have worn the iconic wizard's cape, glasses and scar in front of the cameras. That is, until an accident changed his life forever.During the making of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, David broke his neck in a stunt rehearsal and was instantly paralysed. From talented junior gymnast and stunt prodigy to fully qualified Hollywood stuntman, his story is a brutally honest portrait of a man who lost everything but found different ways to reimagine new possibilities with love, friendship and optimism - and he later co-created a BAFTA-nominated documentary about his life. David's behind-the-scenes look at one of the biggest film series of all time is both jaw-dropping and hilarious.Powerful and emotional, his is a story of hope and vulnerability and paints a picture of what it truly takes to rebuild a life and become The Boy Who Lived. -------------What readers think:'Brutally honest, utterly engaging, deeply sad yet incredibly uplifting. A must-read.' ????? 'A million stars for this incredible book.' ????? 'A beautifully authentic story and I'm a better person for having read it.' ????? 'I'm not normally a reader, but I managed to finish this book in two days. A spectacular piece of writing!'?????

Life in the 1950s and 60s sometimes appears to have been lived by people from another planet. Such is the difference in lifestyle between now and then. Computers, social media, and all the problems that come with living in the 21st century were a distant dream (or nightmare). Life was lived at a slower pace, and people had more time for one another. This is not to say that times couldn't be hard, and life certainly wasn't always a 'bed of roses'. Through it all, there was always a shoulder to lean on, or a nice cup of tea made by a friend or neighbour, who would listen patiently to your troubles or triumphs (counsellors extraordinaire ) There appeared to be no shortage of characters, and everyone had a tale to tell. 'A peck of dirt won't kill you, ' was a well-used adage, and from childhood to old age, people were less fearful than today, thus allowing them to live their lives to the full. This book is about the people who lived through those times, their quirks and habits, their generosity and good humour. Humour plays a big part in this book, with a sprinkling of every other human emotion. The author sincerely hopes that young and old will enjoy looking back at a bygone time which was only 60 short years ago

Forty short, easy-reading memoirs record events that occurred when the author and his family lived and worked in the Middle East. This was before the days of mobile phones and all forms of communication made possible by the advent of the internet. The stories cover family matters such as travel, language learning, cultural issues, home life, illness and accident. The work stories are about teaching Science and English at secondary level, followed by the production and distribution of Christian films and teaching material in Arabic on video. The events all took place in peaceful Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Cyprus, and also in civil war torn Lebanon when both "peacekeeping" Syrian and "occupation" Israeli armies were also deployed in different parts of the land. The majority of the stories tell of incidents that could be construed to have a supernatural, or God directed, element in them. The reader is left to decide which of the stories recount supernatural incidents or if the events described were just welcome and timely coincidents.
