One of the most eccentric and accomplished politicians in all of American history, John Randolph (1773-1833) led a life marked by controversy. The long-serving Virginia congressman and architect of southern conservatism grabbed headlines with his prescient comments, public brawls, and clashes with every president from John Adams to Andrew Jackson. The first biography of Randolph in nearly a century, John Randolph of Roanoke provides a full account of the powerful Virginia planter's hard-charging life and his impact on the formation of conservative politics. The Randolph lineage loomed large in early America, and Randolph of Roanoke emerged as one of the most visible - and certainly the most bombastic - among his clan. A colourful orator with aristocratic manners, he entertained the House of Representatives (and newspaper readers across the country) with three-hour-long speeches on subjects of political import, drawing from classical references for his analogies, and famously pausing to gain ""courage"" from a tumbler at his side. Adept at satire and uncensored in his verbal attacks against colleagues, he invited challenges to duel from those he offended; in 1826, he and the then-secretary of state Henry Clay exchanged gunfire on the banks of the Potomac.A small-government Jeffersonian in political tastes, Randolph first entered Congress in 1799. As chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee he memorably turned on President Jefferson, once and for all, in 1805, believing his fellow Virginian to have compromised his republican values. As a result, Randolph led the ""Old Republicans,"" a faction that sought to restrict the role of the federal government. In this rich biography, David Johnson draws upon an impressive array of primary sources - Randolph's letters, speeches, and writings - previously unavailable to scholars. John Randolph of Roanoke tells the story of a young nation and the unique philosophy of a southern lawmaker who defended America's agrarian tradition and reveled in his own controversy.
Examines literatures and histories of the Cape in relation to postcolonial debates about nationalism. How the Cape Colony was imagined as a political community is examined by considering a variety of writers, from major European literati and intellectuals (Camoes, Southey, Rousseau, Adam Smith), to well-known travel writers like Francois Levaillant and Lady Anne Barnard, to figures on the margins of colonial histories, like settler rebels, slaves, and early African nationalists. Complementing the analyses of these primary texts are discussions of the many subsequent literary works and histories of the Cape Colony. These diverse writings are discussed first in relation to current debates in postcolonial studies about settler nationalism, anti-colonial resistance, and the imprint of eighteenth-century colonial histories on contemporary neo-colonial politics. Secondly, the project of imagining the post-apartheid South African nation functions as a critical lens for reading the eighteenth-century history of the Cape Colony, with the extensive commentaries on literature and history associated with the Thabo Mbeki presidencies given particular attention. Key Features * Major European literary figures and philosophers read in the context of colonial history * Materialist/historicist approach to postcolonial literature * Critical engagement with dominant theories of colonial nationalism
William Preston 'Bill' Longley (1851-1878), though born into a strong Christian family, turned bad during Reconstruction in Texas, much like other young boys of that time, including the deadlyJohn Wesley Hardin. He went on a murderous rampage over the last few years of his life, shotgunning Wilson Anderson in retribution for Anderson's killing of a relative; killing George Thomas in McLennan County; and shooting William 'Lou' Shroyer in a running gunfight.Longley even killed the Reverend William R. Lay while Lay was milking a cow. Once he was arrested in 1877, and subsequently sentenced to hang, his name became known statewide as an outlaw and a murderer. Through a series of 'autobiographical' letters written from jail while awaiting the hangman, Longley created and reveled in his self-centeredimage as a fearsome, deadly gunfighter - the equal, if not the superior, of the vaunted Hardin. Declaring himself the 'worst outlaw' in Texas, the story that he created became the basis for his historical legacy, unfortunately relied on and repeated over and over by previous biographers, but all wrong. In truth, Bill Longley was not the daring figure that he attempted to paint. Rick Miller's thorough research shows that he was, instead, a braggart who exaggerated greatly his feats as a gunman. The murders that could be credited to him were generally nothing more than cowardly assassinations. Bloody Bill Longley was first published in a limited edition in 1996. Miller separates fact from fancy, attempting to prove or disprove Longley's many claims of bloodshed. Since the time of the first edition, diligent research has located and identified the outlaw's body, the absence of which was a longstanding myth in itself. This revised edition includes that part of the Longley story, as well asseveral new items of information that have since come to light.

Limestone has been one of the most indispensable building materials in Britain since the Roman period, when it was widely used for mortar. It was in the medieval era that lime began to be used in farming, alongside marl, as a means of increasing the output of both arable crops and livestock. The impact of limestone extraction in the Yorkshire Dales, once one of the most productive quarrying areas in Britain, has been huge. The area has thrown up many innovative entrepreneurs, and limestone quarries are an integral feature of today's dalescape. The quarries have important stories to tell, not least those of the generations of men who toiled in hostile conditions to build the country's economy. In Limestone Industries of the Yorkshire Dales, Dr David Johnson provides a detailed account of lime's myriad uses, and the historical and technological forces that led to each. Until relatively recently, lime was an ingredient, in one form or another, of almost every aspect of British life. This is the story of limestone quarrying and its processing into lime, and the impact it has had on one of the most beautiful parts of Britain. This revised edition of the book brings the story completely up to date and includes material and illustrations not previously available.

This book is about the ritual world of a group of rural settlements in Shanxi province in pre-1949 North China. Temple festivals, with their giant processions, elaborate rituals, and operas, were the most important influence on the symbolic universe of ordinary villagers and demonstrate their remarkable capacity for religious and artistic creation. The great festivals described in this book were their supreme collective achievements and were carried out virtually without assistance from local officials or educated elites, clerical or lay.Chinese culture was a performance culture, and ritual was the highest form of performance. Village ritual life everywhere in pre-revolutionary China was complex, conservative, and extraordinarily diverse. Festivals and their associated rituals and operas provided the emotional and intellectual materials out of which ordinary people constructed their ideas about the world of men and the realm of the gods. It is, David Johnson argues, impossible to form an adequate idea of traditional Chinese society without a thorough understanding of village ritual. Newly discovered liturgical manuscripts allow him to reconstruct North Chinese temple festivals in unprecedented detail and prove that they are sharply different from the Daoist- and Buddhist-based communal rituals of South China.

With no clear path for them, the fate of her people lies with Helia, daughter of the Goddess.
Dressed in outrageously romantic uniforms, led by a flamboyant clique of aristocrats and ex-troopers, Napoleon’s cavalry had a picturesque quality that belied its ruthless methods and tremendous service record. Nothing quite like its veterans had ever been seen before, for not even a horse soldier of Imperial Rome could claim to have fought in Austria, Germany, Egypt, Italy, Poland, Belgium and Spain.Alongside these battle-scarred veterans rode inexperienced young conscripts who never acquired their senior comrades’ lust for victory, though they came to share their philosophy. The force to which they belonged was far from perfect. The constant campaigning bred drunkenness and brutality, the levelling processes of the Revolution had already bred indiscipline. On a score of battlefields, nevertheless, Napoleon’s cavalrymen succeeded in rising above their faults, owing largely to the confidence which they placed in the most brilliant group of horse generals ever contained in one European army: generals like the handsome Lasalle, who said that no French hussar ought to live beyond the age of 30; Marulaz, who had 26 horses killed under him; and Murat, the inn-keeper’s son who became a king.

Parents can play an immensely important role in supporting their children's literacy learning at home, but how can primary teachers enlist the support of parents in helping children learn literacy? With a focus on improving children's literacy skills, this book provides practical answers to key questions that are directly relevant to all primary teachers and to many parents. It presents new ways of linking learning in home and school through a range of activities that can be used to share knowledge between children, parents and teachers. Activities include:teachers and children making videos to show parents how children learn literacy in schoolparents and children taking photos of the 'everyday' literacy they use outside schoolparents and teachers exchanging information through Home-School folders and diaries.Particular attention is given to ways of working with parents from a diverse range of family backgrounds reflecting the multi-ethnic nature of many schools today. The practical activities can easily be fitted into the day-to-day activities of busy classrooms and can provide crucial new ways of improving children's learning of literacy skills.

Linear Analysis of Skeletal Structures meets the demands of a typical prominent structural engineering educator who aims to: "teach students how to model, how to use computer packages in real contexts, to validate models, verify results and carry out parameter studies. Hand analysis is now only for very simple problems and for back-of-envelope checks". The checks referred to are usually statically based and it is therefore presumed that the reader has a firm background in statics. This unique book principally: tackles statically indeterminate structuresreplaces traditional hand analysis teaching of indeterminate structures by a workbook format approach based on qualitative and quantitative (computer analysis) studiesprovides comprehensive coverage of the behavior of skeletal structures - beams, plane trusses arches, plane frames, space trusses, grids and space framesuses case studies to provide experience of, using computer packages in real contexts; worksheets to develop qualitative understanding; and computer based problems to carry out parameter studiesemphasises computer modeling and the validation of computer models and solutions. A workbook approach is used with individual chapters covering fundamentals, beams, plane trusses, arches, plane frames, space trusses, grids, and space frames. Each chapter describes the fundamental behavior of a particular structural form, which is supplemented by qualitative examples and problems. The book will make essential reading for all levels of structural, civil, mechanical and aerospace engineers. The book will be an invaluable aid for all students of structural and civil engineering, from the later years of an undergraduate course through to postgraduate work and the early stages of graduate training within the field.
Documents the Army Medical Department's efforts to assess the medical risks associated with emerging Army operational concepts and its capacity to mitigate these risks. As the Army transforms itself for the future and develops new operational concepts and technologies, the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) is identifying operational medicine issues whose resolution will be critical to its ability to support the Army of the future. The purpose of this research was to develop a method to assess these issues and further investigate a subset of them.
