Strategies for Success in Scientific Conferences and Publishing
In the early years of a career, scientists face challenging decisions on how best to communicate their results in publications and at conferences. The impact of such decisions can prove career-defining. In this book, the reader is carefully taken through a whole range of factors and procedures for strategic consideration. The key to success is understanding the perspectives of the decision-makers and processes involved, especially the crucial role played by reviewers in deciding on submissions. Emphasis is given to a range of factors to be considered when choosing the optimal journals and conferences, with added guidance on how to avoid weak and predatory publishers, or disreputable conference organizers. In discussing the course of publishing, there are tips on how to respond to referees, how to handle any disputes, and how to act as a referee. Prominent ethical issues are also discussed, including improper use of AI, ghost authorship, plagiarism, and multiple publishing. Advice is given on the different opportunities provided by conferences with a broad or narrow focus, and those designed for national or international participation. By describing the expectations and duties associated with conference roles, including presenter, session chair, membership of a program committee, and conference organizer, the reader is prepared to better appreciate how to become successful at each level of activity as their career progresses.
Making Sport Great Again

Making Sport Great Again

Blending critical theory, conjunctural cultural studies, and assemblage theory, Making Sport Great Again introduces and develops the concept of uber-sport: the sporting expression of late capitalism’s conjoined corporatizing, commercializing, spectacularizing, and celebritizing forces. On different scales and in varying spaces, the uber-sport assemblage is revealed both to surreptitiously reinscribe the neoliberal preoccupation with consumption and to nurture the individualized consumer subject. Andrews further probes how uber-sport normalizes the ideological orientations and associate affective investments of the Trump assemblage’s authoritarian populism. Even as it articulates the regressive politicization of sport, Making Sport Great Again serves also as a call to action: how might progressives rearticulate uber-sport in emancipatory and actualizing political formations?

In modern optics, the photon concept is indispensable for an ever-increasing range of applications, including many that are now prominent in twenty-first-century technology. To fully appreciate these applications, it is essential to understand the quantum principles and the mechanisms involved. This book, written by two widely published experts in the area, aims to provide a sound and up-to-date description of the theory and applications of photon science. It concisely explains substantial theory with a light touch, and the text is illustrated with original color figures.

This book provides a broad introductory survey of this remarkable field, aiming to establish and clearly differentiate its physical principles, and also to provide a snapshot portrait of many of the most prominent current applications. Primary emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of the fundamental photonic origin behind the mechanism that operates in each type of effect. To this end, the first few chapters introduce and develop core theory, focusing on the physical significance and source of the most salient parameters, and revealing the detailed interplay between the key material and optical properties. Where appropriate, both classical and photonic (quantum mechanical) representations are discussed. The number of equations is purposely kept to a minimum, and only a broad background in optical physics is assumed. With copious examples and illustrations, each of the subsequent chapters then sets out to explain and exhibit the main features and uses of the various distinct types of mechanism that can be involved in optical nanomanipulation, including some of the very latest developments. To complete the scene, we also briefly discuss applications to larger, biological particles. Overall, this book aims to deliver to the non-specialist an amenable introduction to the technically more advanced literature on individual manipulation methods. Full references to the original research papers are given throughout, and an up-to-date bibliography is provided for each chapter, which directs the reader to other selected, more specialised sources.

This book provides a fresh, photon?based description of modern molecular spectroscopy and photophysics, with applications drawn from chemistry, biology, physics and materials science. The concise and detailed approach includes some of the most recent developments, dispensing with old?fashioned treatments of theory and instrumentation.Instead, the focus is on how light absorption and scattering occurs in molecules, and what happens to the energy that the molecules can acquire. The author draws upon his extensive experience of teaching these subjects at university level. Departing from the entrenched pattern of most textbooks, this book provides a modern and amenable treatment, directly meeting the needs of today’s scientist. The text is fresh and lively, interspersed with vivid original figures, and there are numerous worked examples, illustrating the principles with real?world examples.
