Tobi Kahn: Sacred Spaces for the 21st-century

The volume and accompanying exhibition discuss the creation of sacred space in the 21st century, examining 28 works by Tobi Kahn including his recent commission for Congregation Emau-El B'ne Jeshrun in Milwaukee. Each work is accompanied by a Meditation by novelist and poet Nessa Rapoport. From large canvasses with biomorphic forms to three-dimensional pieces such as the art nouveau-influenced thrones, Kahn's work has a presence that is immediately striking, and his reputation has grown steadily since his inclusion in the Guggenheim's New Horizons in American Art show in 1985. Much of Kahn's art, especially his landscapes, is ambiguously abstract, inviting the viewer to project onto it their own ideas, feelings and desires. Acting as aids to contemplation, they can be seen as building on the work of Romantic artists who sought to capture the majesty of nature and imbue it with divine resonance.

Revelation in Christianity means the divine disclosure of events that are otherwise inaccessible to human beings. But if no one was present to see them happen, how can the faithful know what they looked like? Since the late Middle Ages, images have worked in various ways with sacred texts, such as the Bible, the Lives of Saints, and devotional books, in bringing miracles and mythic events into visually accessible form. The works of artists have also aided the interpretation of difficult texts, such as prophetic and apocalyptic books of the Bible. In this study, David Morgan examines the art of seeing things and explores how art has played a key role in the creative production and interpretation of visions and apparitions. Traversing a long stretch of historical development, he offers new insights into a significant cultural history of European Christianity from the late Middle Ages to the twentieth century.

Citizen Science in Biology

Citizen Science in Biology

This important book charts the historical development of citizen science, from its earliest days with amateur individuals working on their own, to the modern incarnation which often sees large numbers of people cooperating on environmental or health projects. It will help project designers understand the heritage of citizen science, including the best way to avoid previous mistakes, and how to ensure results which are both reliable and informative. It also encourages individuals to participate and to think beyond the simple collection of data; how can each of us contribute? As scientists themselves, the authors have a clear understanding of the need for reliable, rather than anecdotal, information about the ups and downs of citizen science projects. Both have been involved in such initiatives, from individual data collection to testing identification keys for practical use by the public. Many readers will be surprised at the breadth of citizen science and will discover the ability to undertake their own investigations. This book will be of great interest to anyone participating in or organising collaborative citizen science projects.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was one of the first in a new wave of global multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) formed after the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. It is widely recognized as being one of the most successful biodiversity MEAs.Regulating International Trade in Wildlife: 50 Years of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora represents the first published history of the Convention to coincide with the 50th anniversary of its entry into force. It examines the context under which the Convention was created, and charts the development of its internal organization, including its governing and intersessional bodies and its secretariat, and the personalities that built them.CITES’ business is about the conservation of species affected by international trade. This book reviews the application of CITES to whales, the African elephant, crocodilians, vicuña, timber and tree species, fish and other marine species. The Convention’s compliance framework is arguably its most pre-eminent feature. The book looks at the way that key obligations on Parties have been identified, the standards of implementation set, what efforts are made to help Parties comply with these and what sanctions are taken against Parties that fail to implement them. Finally, the author offers some personal reflections on the successes and failures of CITES, based on his 40 years of engagement with the Convention and looks ahead to how it might develop in its second half-century. Regulating International Trade in Wildlife: 50 Years of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is of great interest to wildlife scientists, including conservationists, historians, biologists, as well as environmental scientists and non-governmental organizations.FEATURES:· Tracks the history of the development of CITES, its forerunners, origins, negotiation and entry into force· Reviews the internal development of the Convention and its place in the wider debate about environmental security · Extensively referenced from primary research of the Convention’s archives· Incisive analysis of its successes and failures

The Secret Life of a Meadow

Glorious flower meadows were part of our life force for 2000 years or more before we swept them away last century on the altar of progress. Is there to be no more drinking from their font of well being? This book says not. Lavishly illustrated, it describes their history and, from the few remaining examples, it shows us how beautiful they are, how rich in plants and animals. It coaches us in their creation, even in small gardens, or their restoration in larger fields. It tells of the extraordinary lives of even the most ordinary denizens, little secrets that make the meadow's world go around and the convoluted links between the many plants and animals that keep everything in balance. Their stories are woven, season-by-season, into a year in the life of two meadows, a small, garden meadow and a larger old paddock. We hear of birds that plant trees, bacteria that become plant organelles, plants that drink from other plants, plants that fool or poison insects and insects that turn the tables, ants that foster butterflies, mice that navigate by compass, snails that house bees and how all of these connections, together with the flow of energy and nutrients, result in a healthy ecosystem. The book even suggests how adults and children alike can see these things for themselves. So, read this book and help your local green space to become a meadow and revel in it.

Everyone wants to find buried treasure. Right? What about a reef of gold? In 1911, Harold Bell Lasseter announced to the world he had found a fabulous reef of gold in outback central Australia. A reef of gold bearing rock some five or more miles long. When Lasseter eventually convinced enough financial backers to go search for the gold reef again in 1930, not only did the expedition not find any trace of the reef but Lasseter lost his life when he continued searching on his own. Over the years many have searched for the reef, but no one has found it. Does it exist or was it Lasseter's folly?Harry, a recent graduate with a degree in geology, was given a hand written journal as a graduation present from his Grandad, a gold prospector for most of his life. Does the journal contain directions to Lasseter's Reef? Is there a map identifying where the reef is located? If not, is there some other reason why no one has found a trace of the reef since Lasseter first saw it in 1911?There is an old saying amongst gold prospectors that "gold moves". and "you find gold, where you find it".Outback central Australia is an old land, nothing ever changes, so the locals say. Does that mean that as no one has ever found a single trace of Lasseter's Reef that Lasseter was a con artist? You make up your own mind as you follow Harry, Naomi, Clowie, Johno and Jacob in their hunt for potentially the largest gold reef the world has ever known.

Common views of religion typically focus on the beliefs and meanings derived from revealed scriptures, ideas, and doctrines. David Morgan has led the way in radically broadening that framework to encompass the understanding that religions are fundamentally embodied, material forms of practice. This concise primer shows readers how to study what has come to be termed material religion-the ways religious meaning is enacted in the material world.Material religion includes the things people wear, eat, sing, touch, look at, create, and avoid. It also encompasses the places where religion and the social realities of everyday life, including gender, class, and race, intersect in physical ways. This interdisciplinary approach brings religious studies into conversation with art history, anthropology, and other fields. In the book, Morgan lays out a range of theories, terms, and concepts and shows how they work together to center materiality in the study of religion. Integrating carefully curated visual evidence, Morgan then applies these ideas and methods to case studies across a variety of religious traditions, modeling step-by-step analysis and emphasizing the importance of historical context. The Thing about Religion will be an essential tool for experts and students alike.
