In the tradition of Who Owns the Future, an MIT Media Lab scientist imagines how everyday objects can intuit our needs, improve our lives, and form "an ethereal interconnection of gadgets and human desires that...will pervade our lives in the very near future" (The Wall Street Journal). We are now standing at the precipice of the next transformative development, a world in which technology becomes more human. Soon, connected technology will be embedded in hundreds of everyday objects we already use: our cars, wallets, watches, umbrellas, even our trash cans. These objects will respond to our needs, come to know us, and even learn to think ahead on our behalf. David Rose calls these devices--which are just beginning to creep into the marketplace--Enchanted Objects. In Rose's vision of the future, technology atomizes, combining itself with the objects that make up the very fabric of daily living. Such innovations will be woven into the background of our environment, enhancing human relationships, channeling desires for omniscience, long life, and creative expression. The enchanted objects of fairy tales and science fiction will enter real life. Groundbreaking, timely, and provocative, Enchanted Objects is a "delightful" (The New York Times) blueprint for a better future, where efficient solutions come hand in hand with technology that delights our senses. It is essential reading for designers, technologists, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and anyone who wishes to take a glimpse into the future.
A poetic description of the actions of the Medal of Honor recipients from the Vietnam War.
A poetic description of the actions of the Medal of Honor recipients from the Vietnam War.
A collection of original poems about PTSD and war experiences written in a poetic format from a Vietnam War veteran.
The year is 1995 and Britain like the rest of Europe has been under German occupation for approaching 50 years. Since that fateful day back in 1945, when the Luftwaffe dropped the world's first atomic bomb on the island of Cyprus, the Nazi's have reigned supreme throughout Europe.Adolf Hitler had finally realised his dream of a mighty German empire, but unaware of events elsewhere, he had taken his own life in a bunker near Berlin. So despite the Third Reich's glorious victory, the loss of their beloved leader was a cross that the whole of Germany would have to bear for all eternity Or was it?Thanks to the brilliant mind of Tony Smith, an English quantum physicist, they have suddenly found themselves presented with the holy grail of all inventions;A 'Temporal Energy Separation System'. In other words, a time-machine Surely, a dream come true for the German command. They now have opportunity to save the Furher from his own suicide and deliver him to their people on the 50th anniversary of their triumph. Using his own machine, Tony Smith was to be sent back in time to 1945. His mission; to inform Adolf Hitler of his pending victory and therefore prevent his untimely death.A simple enough plan, but a plan that was to ultimately fail Instead, events don't quite transpire as they had hoped and Tony now finds himself in the hands of the brutal and merciless Nazi's. About to be shot for being a spy, Tony is rescued by the Polish resistance, including the beautiful Kaska. Seeing the war from a different perspective, and witnessing first hand the atrocities carried out by the Germans, Tony, realises that, instead of saving Hitler, he has the power to change the outcome of the war Will he seize the chance?Aware that something back in 1945 was amiss, could the powers that be, back in 1995, prevent him from doing so, knowing that such a paradox could threaten their very existence. A tense and exciting race across Europe and against time ensues. If Tony succeeds, what would be the consequences to him and his family? In fact, what would be the consequences to the entire World ?Will he face these consequences and change the course of history or will he be stopped in his tracks?Wherever and whenever, Tony Smith finds himself, will he be happy or will he live to regret the day he ever invented the time-machine?
Sexually, I'm More of a Switzerland: More Personal Ads from the London Review of Books

From the nation that gave us Victorian virtues, here is another irresistible collection of brilliant, bawdy and often absurd personal ads from the world's funniest--and smartest--lonely-hearts column. These ads prove that even if you're lonely, you don't have to be boring, as advertisers in this book demand much more than long walks on the beach from their potential mates. . Arranged by theme ("The Usual Hyperbole and a Whiff of Playful Narcissism"), and including footnotes to obscure references, Sexually I'm More of a Switzerland promises to be, like its predecessor, "a bracing splash of cold reality in the flushed face of romance" ( Chicago Tribune )..
This book presents the research of the 'Sydney School' in language and literacy pedagogy. Widely known as genre-based pedagogy, the research is cutting-edge, but is built on 30 years of developments in the field, in a unique collaboration between functional linguists and literacy educators. This collaboration has transformed linguistic and pedagogic theory into a powerful, comprehensive methodology for embedding literacy teaching in educational practice. The book is written to be useful for practitioners, researchers and students, building up pedagogic, linguistic and social theory in steps, contextualized within teaching practice. Topics covered include the genre-based writing pedagogy, genres across the school curriculum, pedagogy for learning through reading, and the pedagogic metalanguage developed in the research. On one hand this volume offers educators an unparalleled set of strategies for transforming educational outcomes; on the other it offers researchers powerful tools for investigating and redesigning educational practice.

A pre-war amateur cycling career is cut short by call-up. Trained as a sniper, the man, whose name we never know for sure, embarks for war-torn Europe. Undecided how to resume his life at the war’s close, and disturbed by what he has left behind on the Continent, he is compelled to return, dispensing first medical aid, then something quite different. A further attempt to take up his cycling career is thwarted when he is inveigled into playing his minor part in a new – Cold – war. Finally settling for a retreat into peaceful obscurity, he discovers even this is not to be. His story, he learns, has been turned into a novel. without his knowledge or approval. As he now reads, comments on and corrects the novel, he begins to struggle to distance himself from the false heroics, and above all, to reclaim his own death.
This book provides an introduction to genre analysis from the perspective of the 'Sydney School' of functional linguistics. Chapter 1 introduces our general orientation to genre from the perspective of system and structure, and places genre within our general model of language and social context. Chapters 2-5 deal with five major families of genres (stories, histories, reports, explanations and procedures), introducing a range of descriptive tools and theoretical developments along the way. Finally in Chapter 6 we deal with a range of issues arising for genre analysis in a model of this kind. The book has been written for a readership of functional linguists, discourse analysts and educational linguists, including their post-graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

Columbus, Georgia, has been run by the same tiny clique for over 100 years - the members of the all-white Big Eddy Club. This is the story of a fascinating and rotten community whose victims pay the ultimate price.
