Sport Beyond Television

Sport Beyond Television

Television is no longer the only screen delivering footage and news to people about sport. Computers, the Internet, Web, mobile and other digital media are increasingly important technologies in the production and consumption of sports media. Sport Beyond Television analyzes the changes that have given rise to this situation, combining theoretical insights with original evidence collected through extensive research and interviews with people working in the media and sport industries. It locates sports media as a pivotal component in online content economies and cultures, and counteracts the scant scholarly attention to sports media when compared to music, film and publishing in convergent media cultures. An expanding array of popular sports media – industry, user, club, athlete and fan produced – is now available and accessible in networked digital communications environments. This change is confounding the thinking of major sports organizations that have lived off the generous revenue flowing from exclusive broadcast contracts with free-to-air and subscription television networks for the last five decades. These developments are creating commercial and policy confusion, particularly as sports audiences and the advertising market fragment in line with the proliferation of niche channels and sources of digital sports media. Chapters in this title examine the shift from broadcast to online sports media markets, the impact of social networking platforms like Twitter and Facebook, evolving user and fan practices, the changing character of sports journalism, and the rise of sports computer gaming. Each chapter traces the socio-cultural implications of trends and trajectories in media sport.

Sport is the most universal feature of popular culture. It crosses language barriers and slices through national boundaries, attracting both spectators and participants, to a common lingua franca of passions, obsessions and desires. This book brings to light the connections between sport and culture. It argues that although sport is obviously a source of pleasure, it is also part of the government of everyday life. The creation of a sporting calendar, movements of rational recreation and the development of physical education in the public sector, are read as ways of disciplining and shaping urban-industrial populations. In addition, sport is examined as a principal front of globalization. The sports process draws together dispersed communities and generates economic wealth. The book demonstrates how commodification, bureaucratization and ideology are fundamental to the organization of sporting cultures.

Playing on the Edge

Contemporary global sport is in constant, sometimes bewildering flux. This book goes beyond orthodox globalisation theory, deploying the metaphor of ‘playing on the edge’ in analysing the dynamic process of making and remaking sport culture in Asia and Oceania. Beyond sport’s traditionally dominant centres in the West, here the edges of the sport and media fields are vividly exposed, re-positioned, blunted and sharpened, revealing many points of tension – racial, ethnic, gendered, classed, sexual, cultural, linguistic, national, etc. – and in many combinations. This embraces many dimensions of the sport-society nexus relating to subjects including association (soccer) and Australia rules football, cricket, esport, casual and urban community sport, the Gay Games, and sports diplomacy. Playing on the Edge engages with the socio-cultural implications of this relentless sporting movement in considering the extent to which the Occidental may, in some respects, be becoming incidental. Playing on the Edge is an exciting contribution to understanding the complexities, specificities, multidirectional nature, and unevenness of sport and globalization. It makes a convincing case for widening analytical horizons and frames of reference as sport cultures in Asia and Oceania influence and perhaps represent the future of world sport. -Professor Toni Bruce, University of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand Focusing on the unconventional geographical pairing of Asia and Oceania, Playing on the Edge offers a fresh perspective on globalization and sport. In addressing enduring concerns with the social, cultural and political dimensions and emerging issues in gender, technology, and intellectual property, the authors illuminate world sport’s complex, edgy connections. -Professor Younghan Cho, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea
Globalisation and the International Economy

Globalisation and the International Economy

Globalisation is no longer a straightforward concept. In light of war, trade conflicts, and geopolitical realignments, this book aims at providing analytical tools to understand and navigate (de-)globalisation. Bridging economic models with real-world complexity, it offers a nuanced introduction to the global economy at a time of uncertainty and transition. Combining theory and practice, the book presents a clear economic perspective without being overly technical. The first part outlines key concepts such as globalisation throughout time, trade theory and barriers, financial globalisation, the reasons for fragmentation in recent years and in a more political perspective how Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine plays in. The second part features expert contributions on the EU’s crossroads, Denmark’s economic resilience and monetary policy, Germany’s growth challenges, China’s strategic shift, the changing character of Foreign Direct Investment and Africa’s emerging role—alongside an analysis of generative AI’s macroeconomic impact. Through a blend of analysis and real-life examples, the book equips readers to understand and reflect on the present and future of globalisation. It is aimed at students of economics, professionals, and anyone interested in how global forces shape economies, societies, and international relations—and how we might navigate a fragmented global order. Michael Hedegaard is Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark. David M. Rowe is Professor of Political Science at Kenyon College. Holger Sandte works as Principal Analyst at the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark.

The Proverbs of Middle-earth
An Arabic proverb says, "Before you shoot the arrow truth, dip in in honey." The works of JRR Tolkien are unique in English Literature, as they are filled with hundreds of original proverbs. 'Not all those who wander are lost, ' 'Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens, ' and 'Never laugh at live dragons' are all poetic, wise, and convincingly real-sounding, but they are also a lens, through which more can be seen. These proverbs belong to entirely invented wisdom traditions and reflect the culture, the philosophical worldview, and the history of those who use them. In "The Proverbs of Middle-earth," David Rowe discovers and investigates the degree to which the 'soul' of each of these fictional civilizations can be understood through the lens of their proverbs. What is revealed enriches the reader's experience of and delight in Middle-earth, as well as illuminating the astounding depth and detail of creativity behind it. Arrows dipped in honey abound
Church: One Pilgrim's Progress

It is home to ancient artefacts, medieval buildings and country houses, and has had many fascinating residents such as the grand old man of politics, W.E. This wonderful compendium of curious anecdotes and curiosities relates tales from the county’s rich history. Beautifully illustrated, it is great for dipping into, but can equally be enjoyed from cover to cover.
