British author and essayist George Orwell shot to fame with two iconic novels: the anti-Stalinist satire Animal Farm and the dystopian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four. A few years after his death in 1950, the CIA bankrolled screen adaptations of both novels as Cold War propaganda. Orwell's depiction of a totalitarian police state captivated the media in the 1980s. Today, mounting anxieties about digital surveillance and globalization have made him a hot property in Hollywood. Drawing on interviews with actors, writers, directors and producers, this book presents the first comprehensive study of Orwell on film and television. Beginning with CBS's 1953 live production of Nineteen Eighty-Four that mirrored the McCarthy witch hunts, the author covers 20 wide-ranging adaptations, documentaries and biopics, including two lost BBC dramatizations from 1965.
The United States and Europe in the Twentieth Century
The relationship between the US and Europe in the 20th century is one of the key considerations in any understanding of international relations/international history during this period. David Ryan first sets the context by looking at the trends and traditions of America’s foreign relations in the 19th century, and then considers the changing nature of America's vision of Europe from 1900 to the present. The book examines America’s response to and involvement in the two World Wars, including the structure of international power after the First World War and American reaction to the rise of Nazi Germany. American/European relations during the Cold War (1945-1970) are discussed, and Ryan considers the contentious debate that America was trying to establish an empire by invitation. Finally, the book looks at the ever-increasing unification of Europe and how this has affected America's role and influence.

The author's smooth, inviting tone is at once in-depth and profound while maintaining an air of conversational storytelling that makes it seem as if one is having coffee with the author and listening to his tales in person. The global nature of David Ryan's stories, whether in tales of his travels or in stories of meeting people from far-off places, gives an exotic and adventurous feeling to the book. At the same time, descriptions of the UK have a familiar and comforting sense of home. In each story, the author deftly integrates personal experiences and emotions with wider observations of how the world around us is changing, capturing the aura of a place or moment in time while reflecting on its transience. This truly makes for an enjoyable read. 'Close Encounters takes you on a journey to different places and times, but always returns to the heart of Belfast. David Ryan describes Belfast in a way that creates both nostalgia for the past and comment for the future.' Tony Macauley. Bestselling author of Paperboy, Bread Boy, All Growed Up Now and Little House on the Peace Line. 'Honest, insightful and witty are three words that I would use to describe this book. Close Encounters is a brave and bold set of personal reflections on life that are shaped by the experiences of David Ryan himself and it is peppered throughout with a healthy dose of humour. His telling of these stories is thought-provoking and unapologetic in addressing some of the challenging cultural issues of our time.' Dr Adam Boddison, Chief Executive Officer, nasen. 'Written from a Christian perspective and with customary candour and self-depreciating humour, Close Encounters offers us a further cornucopia of keenly observed experiences, conversations and reflections. As with Brief Encounters these stories help us discover more about a wealth of characters in our richly diverse world, but ultimately in the process help us learn more about ourselves, our attitudes and our beliefs.' Dr Noel Purdy, Stranmillis University College, Belfast

Major is a German Shepherd Dog. Like most police dogs he is arrogant and more than a little self-centred, with a strong sense of natural justice and a stronger sense of humour. He enjoys nothing more than taking down his criminal prey, and knows that selling meaty lumps in tins is a diabolical conspiracy. He despairs at humansO inability to use their senses, although his handler, Noddy, gets by with his help, and he regards most police dog instructors as superhuman (except the ones that are schafskspfe). Major tells of how and why he signed up, and of his first winter fighting crime. It is an epic saga of one dogOs battle against human pond-life and a lurcher called Wendy, in four-dimensional space-time. Amongst other things it features a pitch invasion, a fire extinguisher and a Chindit. Oh, and people get bitten too. DonOt expect a who-dunnit, or even a why-they-dunnit. This is better; this is a how-a-police-dog-dunnit.

Guide & Control Your Pet Dog's Behaviour
David spent twenty-six years as a police dog trainer and ten years as one of the UK's leading dog behaviour counsellors. He now specialises in consulting on the behaviour of dogs thought to be dangerous. He developed his explanation of Guide and Control as the easiest and most effective method for owners to control their pets and guide them into better behaviours, without confrontation or using aversive methods. If you are thinking of buying a puppy or adopting a rescue dog, or are having problems with your dog's behaviour; if your dog isn't as well-mannered as you would like, or if you would simply like a better rapport, David explains how everyone can and should use the simple principles of Guide & Control to build the best possible relationship with a well-mannered dog.
Blasphemers & Blackguards: The Irish Hellfire Clubs
Prostitutes, pimps, cutpurses, murderers, and bawdy houses...What were the hellfire clubs of 18th-century Ireland? Were they really elite groups who engaged in obscene orgies, devil worship, and the ritual murder of servants? These questions have intrigued virtually everyone who has visited the supposed hellfire club meeting place in the Dublin Mountains, or heard the lurid stories that are associated with it. Cutting through this veil of myth and legend, Blasphemers & Blackguards: The Irish Hellfire Clubs reveals the truth about these mysterious societies. The book uncovers striking new information about the outrageous activities of these clubs - provocative blasphemy, taboo sexual activities, atrocities (most shockingly, the ritualistic murder of a servant), and the clubs' habit of toasting the devil. *** "...this is a well-researched book that challenges many of the popular misconceptions about Irish hellfire clubs. Ryan has not been content to simply reproduce the mythologies of this culture for a general audience, but has delved deep into the archives to produce a readable and convincing account on a subject of enduring popular interest. - H-Net Reviews in the Humanities & Social Sciences, September 2013 *** "Ryan delivers the reality of early eighteenth-century Dublin, a city that was 'more a relic of the medieval era than a harbinger of modernity: chaotically planned, socially unstable and poorly policed.' Readers will see some similarities between the hellfire clubs and some of today's wealthy, organized-crime syndicates. (However, today's criminal cartels have economic goals, whereas the hellfire clubs' objectives were cruelty and mayhem for the fun of it all.) - The Celtic Connection, March 2014 ? ? ? ?

Examining the broad contexts of US foreign policy and the lingering aftermath of the Vietnam War, David Ryan argues that these events created an opportunistic framing of 9/11, paving the way for the long-held neo-conservative desire for regime change and war in Iraq. He examines the construction of the cultural framework for war following 9/11, the legitimacy of military force in Afghanistan, the rise of anti-Americanism, within the broader contexts over the struggle over legitimacy, identity and leadership. Turning the 'clash of civilisations' thesis on its head, Ryan presents a careful analysis of the evolution of US foreign policy and its engagement with Iraq through the 1980s. While 9/11 provided the opportunity, the post-Vietnam context provides a more pertinent framework for this reflection on the Gulf War, the Iraq War and the strategic implications for US foreign policy.
