The first Rule Monkeys understood the enormous responsibility entrusted to them in 'The Agreement' that was penned by and for the common monkeys. The new nation worked and everyone was happy. Then, things changed. The system created by 'The Agreement' was gradually abused over time. Little Sani Dom ekes out a living with his fishing net. He sees much discontent among the common monkeys since the Rule Monkeys abused their power at the expense of common monkeys. Tensions escalate and word of a secret meeting spreads. At the meeting, a wise old monkey provides some answers. But are these the answers the monkeys want to hear?Who is this book for? It's for anyone looking for a beautifully illustrated story that shows how easy it is for corrupt leaders to manipulate the 'rules' to their own benefit. It's for who wants to communicate, simply, how totalitarianism emerges from even the best of systems conceived with the best of 'Agreements'. What is The Monkey Endgame? It's approachable political fiction for young and old. It's a story that explores the dangers of fake compassion and political misdirection. It's political fiction that addresses government corruption. It's a fable about government, society, and the need for an 'Agreement' that keeps Rule Monkeys from enriching themselves at the expense and freedom of common monkeys. Other QuestionsIt's a short story. Why? - Good question. The story is long enough to explore major monkey mistakes, but short enough to remain interesting and relatable. Why is the book illustrated? - There are a couple reasons for including illustrations. First, the illustrations reinforce that this is not our world. We can talk honestly about cause and effects in the monkey nation, because no one actually lives in that world. In this story, it's about 'ideas' not 'ideologies'. Second, illustrations are fun for any age - and these illustrations by Zack Demirtshyan draw the reader into the monkey world. Third, this is a fable, and fables need illustrations Can I read some of the content? - Absolutely Please see the "Look Inside" feature above. "The Monkey Endgame draws its own conclusions in story form, but you don't have to agree with them. The point is for all minds to think for themselves rather than accept what the Rule Monkeys tell us."

"David Walker’s analysis is incisive and hard hitting. Anyone who believes in the power of social science to inform better policy making should take his criticisms seriously." - Sue Duncan, Former Chief Government Social Researcher and Head of the Government Social Research Service "David Walker has written an unofficial summary of ESRC's achievements and struggles. He brings to the task long experience of the organisation and of the key players, a great familiarity with the literature and a sceptical nature. The result is stimulating, instructive, contentious and sometimes even infuriating." - David Rhind, Chair of the Nuffield Foundation What is the role of the state in distributing research money? How do 'arm's-length' funding agencies relate to public policy and business? This original study looks at the main social science funding agency in the UK, which was established 50 years ago. It examines how funding decisions are related to power. The 'critical' and ‘policy' aspects of successful research bids are discussed. Walker asks the tricky question, why has social science research not achieved a more salient role in state policy formation and management strategy: is the funding agency responsible? Insightful, engrossing and highly original, the book will be required reading for anyone who has written or will write a Social Science research bid and, more widely, for students of power, knowledge and culture.

The second of two books exploring the buildings of the north-east of Scotland, this volume surveys Aberdeen – the nation’s third-largest city – and the southern area of Aberdeenshire, including the former county of Kincardineshire. Among Aberdeen’s architectural highlights are the great medieval cathedral and burgh church of St Nicholas, the buildings of King’s College, and magnificent civic, commercial and domestic buildings of the Victorian and Edwardian age. In addition, the book showcases not only Aberdeenshire’s greatest houses and castles including Crathes, Craigievar and Balmoral, the royal family’s Scottish estate, but also buildings and monuments as varied in scale and type as prehistoric hillforts, Georgian town houses, rural churches, fishing lodges and textile mills. Both volumes are comprehensively illustrated with specially commissioned colour photography.

IT will be recollected, that I, in the first edition of my "Appeal,"*promised to demonstrate in the course of which, viz. in the course of my Appeal, to the satisfaction of the most incredulous mind, that we Coloured People of these United States, are, the most wretched, degraded and abject set of beings that over lived since the world began, down to the present day, and, that, the white Christians of America, who hold us in slavery, (or, more properly speaking, pretenders to Christianity, ) treat us more cruel and barbarous than any Heathen nation did any people whom it had subjected, or reduced to the same condition, that the Americans (who are, notwithstanding, looking for the Millennial day) have us. All I ask is, for a candid and careful perusal of this the third and last edition of my Appeal, where the world may see that we, the Blacks or Coloured People, are treated more cruel by the white Christians of America, than devils themselves ever treated a set of men, women and children on this earth

Defense Support of Civil Authorities: DoD Mission or Additional Duty?
This paper researches DoD policy regarding employing military forces and capabilities in support of civil authorities. Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) is well codified as a DoD mission. However, only DoD policy allows DoD forces to be employed in support of civil authorities when requested, approved by the President or SecDef, and if available. DoD policy restricts the services from attaining any forces or capabilities solely for the purpose of DSCA. Forces for DSCA missions must come from any combat forces available at the time of request. This paper highlights the fricition DoD policy creates in DSCA mission execution and offers potential recommendations for improvements. As a psychiatric term ‘depression’ dates back only as far as the mid-nineteenth century. Before then a wide range of terms were used: ‘melancholy’ carried enormous weight, and was one of the two confirmed forms of eighteenth-century insanity. This four-volume set is the first large-scale study of depression across an extensive period.
