First published in 1989, Chronicles of Darkness is about images of Africa seen through the eyes of writers, visitors, residents, and native-born. They range from Joseph Conrad and Olive Schreiner, through Laurens van der Post, Karen Blixen and Evelyn Waugh, to more recent writers like Nadine Gordimer, Andre Brink and J.M. Coetzee. Such writers have frequently been faced with feelings of alienation, marginality, exile, self-consciousness, and egoism. It is only in this sense- that the eyes which see are shadowed and troubled- that Africa is a ‘dark continent’ and that these writings are ‘chronicles of darkness’. In some cases, Africa, even if merely a backdrop painted in crude and garish colors, becomes a way of revealing or admitting something about ‘Europe’ which might be concealed when a writer performs in a different theatre. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of English literature and African studies.

David Ward has spent most of his life travelling the globe, with travel, cars, and music as his guiding passions. In 2007, fate—or perhaps just a strong drink—brought him together with a 2003 Brabus smart car (equipped with a radio!). This unlikely pairing led him into the thrilling world of competitive rallies, as they took on a prestigious European event and won, earning them a spot in car enthusiasts’ hearts. They raced overnight from Land’s End to John O' Groats, tackled Scotland’s NC500 in the dead of winter, and even caught the attention of TV and film. When the smart car needed a rest, David carried on, navigating 3,000 miles around Europe in a vintage 1972 beach buggy. Later, he took another smart car on a 7,500-mile trek from Europe’s northernmost tip to its southernmost point. David’s adventures, narrated with humour and warmth, capture the joy and resilience of exploration. His journey proves that the spirit of adventure is alive, no matter the vehicle.

The Settle & Carlisle railway over the roof of England is without doubt one of the most spectacular in the country. The author first found the line by cycling a 100-mile round trip from home. This and many more cycling adventures - including a day in Ais Gill signal box, a night at Garsdale troughs and exploring for the first time the line from Garsdale to Keighley - are all featured, as are trips to Alston, Kirkby Stephen East and Leeds. On 11 August 1968, when the final BR steam train ran, all enthusiasts thought that was the end of main-line steam. However, a BR steam ban brought this to an end. It is truly remarkable that the Settle & Carlisle line survived closure and, following the lifting of the steam ban, preserved steam engines have now battled to Ais Gill summit for the last 40 years.
