Eight and a Half Light Years from Home
A spaceship with corrupted software crashes on a cold February evening in front of a Coast Guard helicopter. Immediately, the incident is reported to the Secretary of Defense who orders the craft and beings on board to be transported to Area 51 by a NASA exo-biologist roused from his sleep in the middle of the night."I became an exo-biologist because there were so few exos that nobody could prove me wrong."The exo-biologist and the aliens discuss human oddities for eight and a half light years, before their software is corrected. They leave, only to return to obtain a nuclear weapon to destroy the hated Mouse people.About the AuthorDavid White is a former newspaper reporter and company spokesman. He lives in Texas with his wife Nadine, who makes great chicken and dumplings and carrot cake. He states, "When I was editing the book, I knew what was coming, but I would still laugh."

Kitchen Chaos VOL I: A Casual Calamity is a simple collection of mouth-watering dishes; each hand picked to allow you to embrace your less than adequate cooking skills as you fumble your way through these intermediate level recipes. The recipes we have chosen, tested and potentially screwed up are ideal for small group gatherings or larger groups (if you consider yourself a mathematician and can double/triple the recipes without the aid of Carol Vorderman). Our hopeless team have covered Starters, Mains, Desserts and even DRINKS Say goodbye to fast food... or even food cooked correctly, with The Kitchen Criminals' help even you can mess it up. Why? ... Because cooking isn't just for chefs, it's for talent-less disaster magnets too.

Organizational or corporate ‘culture’ is the most overused and least understood word in business, if not society. While the topic has been an object of keen academic interest for nearly half a century, theorists and practitioners still struggle with the most basic questions: What is organizational culture? Can it be measured? Is it a dependent or independent variable? Is it causal in organizational performance, and, if so, how? Paradoxically, managers and practitioners ascribe cultural explanations for much of what constitutes organizational behavior in organizations, and, moreover, believe culture can be engineered to their own designs for positive business outcomes. What explains this divide between research and practice? While much academic research on culture is challenged by ontological, epistemic and ethical difficulties, there is little empirical evidence to show culture can be deliberately shaped beyond espoused values. The gap between research and practice can be explained by one simple reason: the science and practice of culture has yet to catch up to managerial intuition.Managers are correct in suspecting culture is a powerful normative force, but, until now, current theory and research is not able to adequately account for cultural behavior in organizations. Rethinking Culture describes and presents evidence for a new framework of organizational culture based on the cognitive science of the so-called cultural mind. It will be of relevance to academics and researchers with an interest in business and management, organizational culture, and organizational change, as well as cognitive and cultural anthropologists and sociologists interested in applications of theory in organizational and institutional settings.

The Russian Democratic Party Yabloko
Western analysts have become increasingly concerned with President Putin's centralization and control, with the term 'managed democracy' becoming a byword for the state of the Russian polity. In this important exploration, David White examines the gradual electoral decline of Russia's leading liberal party, the Yabloko Party. In doing so, he provides fascinating insights into the role of opposition, the development of the party system and, above all, the quality of democracy in Russia under President Putin. As an overtly democratic, liberal reformist party with a strong pro-Western orientation, the place and role of Yabloko in Russian politics is of concern to those interested both in the establishment of democratic norms and the relative strength of political forces promoting democratic and market reforms in Russia.

From growing up in Swanley, Kent in the 1950s, through the swinging sixties, and getting into boxing and meeting Henry Cooper, to joining the family firm of chimney sweeping, David White's memoirs and recollections tell of a very different time in Britain's history, of a changing social fabric, post WWII - but at the same time, also show the continuity of community spirit and strong family bonds, with his two sons now taking on the mantle of running the family business, and grandson Harry also getting a look in.

Both the region of Champagne and its wines have always been associated with prestige and luxury. Knowledgeable wine enthusiasts have long discussed top Champagnes with the same reverence they reserve for the finest wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But everyday Americans usually keep Champagne way back on the high shelf. It’s for big celebrations, send-offs, and wedding toasts and, more often than not, is bought by the case. The good stuff costs plenty?and frankly, rarely seems worth the price.Today, though, Champagne is in the midst of a renaissance?no longer to be unjustly neglected.Over the past decade, an increasing number of wine enthusiasts have discovered the joys of grower Champagne?wines made by the farmers who grow the grapes. Thanks to a few key wine importers and America’s newfound obsession with knowing where food comes from, these shipments have been climbing steadily. In But First, Champagne, author David White details Champagne’s history along with that of its wines, explains how and why the market is changing, and profiles the region’s leading producers. This book is essential reading for wine enthusiasts, adventurous drinkers, foodies, sommeliers, and drinks professionals. With a comprehensive yet accessible overview of the region, its history, and its leading producers, But First, Champagne will demystify Champagne for all. From the foreword:"Smart, entertaining, and valuable . . . one of those rare wine books that should appeal to people just getting into Champagne and longtime Champagne obsessives." ?Ray Isle, Executive Wine Editor, Food & Wine

Clinical Chemistry is a comprehensive textbook covering the area of medical science variously known as chemical pathology, clinical chemistry, medical biochemistry and clinical biochemistry. The biochemical processes and physiological interrelationships, of tissues, organs and molecules are discussed in the context of disease processes and related to the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of disease. Also included are analytical processes, such as immunoassay, and how these relate to clinical practice. Although the emphasis of this book is clinical biochemistry, some chapters include sections on haematology, radiology and microbiology where this helps in the understanding of disease processes. The increasing use of the techniques of molecular biology and genetics in the investigation of disease is acknowledged also by appropriate inclusion of these disciplines in a number of chapters. Standard International (SI) units of measurement are used throughout, but for tests where non-SI units are in common use as well as SI units both sets of units are quoted.

CERT® Resilience Management Model (CERT-RMM) is an innovative and transformative way to manage operational resilience in complex, risk-evolving environments. CERT-RMM distills years of research into best practices for managing the security and survivability of people, information, technology, and facilities. It integrates these best practices into a unified, capability-focused maturity model that encompasses security, business continuity, and IT operations. By using CERT-RMM, organizations can escape silo-driven approaches to managing operational risk and align to achieve strategic resilience management goals. This book both introduces CERT-RMM and presents the model in its entirety. It begins with essential background for all professionals, whether they have previously used process improvement models or not. Next, it explains CERT-RMM’s Generic Goals and Practices and discusses various approaches for using the model. Short essays by a number of contributors illustrate how CERT-RMM can be applied for different purposes or can be used to improve an existing program. Finally, the book provides a complete baseline understanding of all 26 process areas included in CERT-RMM. Part One summarizes the value of a process improvement approach to managing resilience, explains CERT-RMM’s conventions and core principles, describes the model architecturally, and shows how it supports relationships tightly linked to your objectives. Part Two focuses on using CERT-RMM to establish a foundation for sustaining operational resilience management processes in complex environments where risks rapidly emerge and change. Part Three details all 26 CERT-RMM process areas, from asset definition through vulnerability resolution. For each, complete descriptions of goals and practices are presented, with realistic examples. Part Four contains appendices, including Targeted Improvement Roadmaps, a glossary, and other reference materials. This book will be valuable to anyone seeking to improve the mission assurance of high-value services, including leaders of large enterprise or organizational units, security or business continuity specialists, managers of large IT operations, and those using methodologies such as ISO 27000, COBIT, ITIL, or CMMI.
